Culture Hints. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 2 June 1899

Culture Hints If you can't be a sun, don't be a cloud, — Ham's Head. Whenever you see a mon who is successful in society, try to . discover what makes him pleasing ; and, if possible, adopt his system.— Beacons- Jield, That was a fine motto found in the poclcetbook of an aged and wealthy merchant who had been accidentally drowned: 'If your hands cannot be usefully employed attond to ihe cul tivation of your mind.' ' The artist, therefore, must have within him. all that is lovely and beautiful. He must be familiar with history; know the human heart like a book; have acquaintance with man ners, customs, .-ind laws of all times; nnd have withal a purpose in his work, not bounded by the price of his pic ture.' Persons who indulge in stilted formality, ignorant that the best man ners are the simplest, ought to read with particular care the Queen's mes sage to Miss Gladstone on hearing of her father's death : ' Beatrice and I,' (not the queen and the princess) ex press our sympathy.' — Yo...

The Stick and the Crust. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 2 June 1899

The Stick and the Crust- I A stiok and a crust of bread. Like tho hands of a clock these two articles told the time o'day for nearly a year in a certain man's life. Yet, unlike the hands of a clock, they were not visible at ' once. When he needed the stiok he had no use for the crust ; and when the crust was welcome he had no further occasion for the stick. Albeit he was a young fellow of twenty-six, you would oe wrong m supposing this stick to have been in the nature of a weapon for attack or defence. In that case the crust and the stiok would have harmonised. As it was, they did not. For the stick was a support, not a club. _ Now, when a man feels the pressure of eighty or ninety years he is apt to want a travelling companion of that sort, but one in the very heyday of youth, not suffering from any injury and not constitutionlly feeble, or malformed, should commonly be able to walk without a stick. And so this young man had always done up to the time when ho fell out with the crus...
