Election Notices SHIRE OF MULGRAVE. To the Ratepayers of the Centre Riding. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 1 August 1914

Election n3otices SHIRE OF MULGRAVE. To the Ratepayers of the Centre Riding. Owing to personal business causing me to be absent from Vic toria for about two or three months, I am reluctantly compelled to withdraw from Nomination as your representative in the Malgrave Shire Council. I deeply regret my inability to stand for election this year, inas much as I am satisfied that the time has arrived when the intro duction of new elements into the Council would be advantageous to the ratepayers. To say that the ratepayers are quite dissatisfied witli the existing representation, is only reiterating an expression of opinion which is heard on all hands, and I had hoped to have been honored by election as your representative in August next in order that I might have used my utmost endeavours to have brought about an inmprove meut in the existing administra tion. In the meantimue, in view of the generally recoguised necessity for drastic reform, and in view ouf tlhe apparent disability of th...

The Turf. AUSTRALIAN HURDLE [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 1 August 1914

The Turf. AUSTRALIAN HURDLE Australian Hurdle I-Flash Jack or Obi 2-Arquebese 3-Capentests Harry Lauder at King's Theatre A very large and tremendously enthusiastic audience at the King's Theatre on Thursday night wet comed Harry Lauder back for his farewell season. From start to finish the comedian, who holds the stage for more than an hour, had the packed house tearful with laughter. His face is truly his fortune, and in every one of his songs he scored an emphatic success, largely by means of facial expression and actor's art. In The Message Boy he entered the stage on a tricycle, with a basket fas tened to the handle bars. His by play when he nearly swallowed a peppermint which he was busily chewing almost threw certain Scotchmen in the audience into hysterics. Then followed the old favorite, Roamin' in the Gloamin' ' with its catchy chorus and the comedian's wink, and his search for the ring to help it out-the rintg that has slipped through the "wee hole in his pooch." Another ...

Oakleigh West Progress Association. A. well-attended meeting of the above was held on Thursday even ing and a good deal of business got through, a full report of which will appear next week. OAKLEIGH v. HAWTHORN POOR KICKING BY OAKLEIGH. ROUGH GAME. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 1 August 1914

OAKLEIGH v. HA WTHORiN POOR KICKING BY OAKLEIGH. ROUGH GAME. By "Follower" The contest between Hawthorr and Oakleigh on the Xavier College oval was exceptionally lively and was productive of fine football it in the opening term ; but in the following quarters the play wae anything" but attractive. There was a fair attendance of loca supporters. Scott, Cox and Clough stripped in place of Lynch, Rice and Cummins. Hawthorn are ex perts with the "elbow" and they took advantage of the lightness of their opponents. Oakleigh seemed to get lost in the running scuffles, Ethell being a notable exception. The home team's kicking was ex cellent and from eight shots they secured a like number of sixers and played with better £com bination. The visitors, on the other hand, put up a far better fight than the scores indicate, but never at any time looked like winners. In the last half, Oak leigh were practically playing only fifteen men. Kilgour's umpirlng was disappointing - he should sltamp out a...
