Snails and Fluke [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 May 1896

Snails and Fluke At a receut meeting of the Vic torian Field Naturalists' Club the Rev. W. Fielder presented a further note on the intermediate hosts of fluke. After referring to the presence of a double-tailed variety occurring in the fresh water mussel (Unio Aus transj, tne note entered into details as to the various forms of cysts brought to light by the recent investi gations, the cyst being the last stage of the fluke embryo passed in the snail before it is eaten by the final host. Perhaps the most important point brought out was that which had re ference to the occurrence of a very large number of snails in the water supply of one of the inland towns in the N.E. district. These snails literary swarm with the cysts of fluke embryos — no less than three different kinds being repeatedly met with. Now it is more than probable that many find their way from the snails into the water supplied to the township and used for drinking pur poses. Whether or riot any of these ! llukes are l...

From the single leaf of it which was first shown, hopes were raised that the manuscript was a famous one known as Codex N., of which six volumes are in the Vatican, four in the British Museum, two in Vienna, and thirty-three in the Island of Patmos, but. of which the other folios are missing. These hopes will soon be confirmed or dispelled by actual comparison. All that can now be said is that the MS., like what re mains of Codex N., is not only a very ancient, but a very beautiful on...

Premature Cattle Birth. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 May 1896

Premature Cattle Birth. Last year a herdsman, in charge of a British herd which was sadly ravaged by abortion, made public his successful treatment of this dread scourge by the internal administration of carbolic acid. He began with small doses given in the food, and gradually increased them until he gave each cow ^oz. every other day, which was the maximum dose. ±ie claimed to have completely eradicated the trouble by this treatment. He continued regularly the use of the car bolic acids as a preventive, but gave it in smaller doses and at longer in tervals. It was stated in the Scotch papers that Principal Williams, of the Edinburgh Veterinary College, was also using carbolic acid success fully in treating this disease. An Iowa farmer, near Albia, read of this remedy, and experimented with it on his herd, which was in a bad way from this disease. He bought pure carbolic acid, diluted it, and gave it in grain feed in very minute doses at the start, gradually increasing it to £oz. ev...

Inoculation for Ticks. A STARTLING STATEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 May 1896

Inoculation for Ticks. A STARTLING STATEMENT. Day by day the question of ticks on cattle becomes more important. Our Chief Inspector of Stock, Mr. Alex. Bruce, has been to Muswellbrook and has declared it to be free of ticks. The fact that he has been there. to investi gate the subiect shows that our Govern ment is keenly alive to the question. In these columns we have given the question the prominence it deserves, but we have refrained from saying much on the subject in the way of cures or prevention, because we have not se«n clearly what was to be done. Quarantine is good, because it delays the coming plague. Dipping is good, perhaps, because it spares the beast from its enemies for a while. But unless we can quarantine the wallabies, the grasshoppers, the wind and the floods, quarantine will be, ultimately, inoperative. Unless we can dip our cattle frequently, that &lso will be of little avail. Inoculation is the only remedy and nobody has yet discovered the real antidote...

Are There Too Many Agricultural Shows? TO THE EDITOR "S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 19 May 1896

Are There Too Many Agricultural Shows? TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.'' Sir, — This folly of holding so many ': shows is to my mind detrimental to us \ as a pastoral country. Comparatively [ speaking, neither England nor America I hold such a large number of shows — or, j rather, so-called shows. The faulb of i it all is the Government subsidy. | Remove that and all the small dis- ?] tricts will perforce combine. I think j it is absurd in the highest degree for Is the Government to subsidise shows in a country like this, where the quality : of our sheep, cattle, horses, and our i| farm and dairy produce is such as i would do credit to any country and any ? show in the world, if they were only \\ distributed properly. The ' Sydney Mail ' has taken up the matter in earnest, and, with your permission, I will quote a paragraph from that paper on the subject : — \ ' The time of occupiers of the soil, men who are placed on the land, should be too valuable to waste on show- . ground...
