Correspondence. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE BEGA GAZETTE.) [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 31 March 1866

(To tbb Ed/tor or thk beoa Gazette. ) Sre,—It was neither roy wiBh or intention to disturb the bile of the Collector of (be electoral roll when I penned ; the few remarks in jour issne of the 24th nit. . I My purpose was merely to awakes the attention of those interested, by pointing out to them their prospective or probabledisfranebisement, «nd having done this—there to let the matter end;—and if the gentleman, in his com* munication, had modestly stated that be had done bis work to the best of his ability, I should still have been si lent ; bat it is evident his self-esteem has been wounded, and in his vindication has travelled somewhat abroad. I made no accusation of "carelessness,"—inaccuracy.—I I said there was, and 8iiW*maiutain there is, and that very inaccurc.cy, in the event of a contested eleoiion, will be the stumbling block to many and many an elector, if dur ing the year he should be solicited for his " vote and in terer/c." The 'rhodomontade about the roll having under...

Practica.Ii Joking.—Practical jokes are at all times to be condemned; they never end well, and very often rc coile on the perpetrators.- A joke of this kind was prac tised lately iu Bega, certainly a more unmeaning, point less attempt we never heard of, and a more mischevious one could not be well conceived, inasmuch as it tends to destroy the confidence which exists, or ought to exist, be tween the settler and his agent in Sydney. The affair is this,—Mr. Henry Clark, Commission Agent, Sydney, re ceived a letter, bearing the signature of one of his consti tuents in Bega, ordering a cottage piano. Mr. Clark pur chased an in sfcrnaient according to order, and dispatched it by return steamer. However it turned out that the party had never wrote or ordered Such a thin?, and was perfectly struck with astouishment at receiving Mr. 1 Clarke's bill; it seems however that some neighbor had pliiyed this hoax as the party had been newly married. Hawever Mr. Clark is the victim of this miserabl...

The Bega Gazette. "Quod Petis Hic Est." SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 1866. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 31 March 1866

Wijt 33?ga #ajcttc. "Quo-'! Petit Hie Est." SATURDAY, MARCH 31s 1866. A Correspondent, in last week's issue, signing himself " B. A.," lias " deemed it" his duty to comment upoa the inconse quent logic of our arguments in support of State-aid to ministers of religion in the in terior, and has—in 3ns own opinion—over thrown the foundation ou which we have . built our opinions. We shall take " B. A.'s" letter striatum. With the opening part of hie letter we en tirely agree; and also with the principles of " Brown Lectures." But in his third paragraph he says: " Now, Sir, in opposi tion to the most profound thinkers, and the far-seeing 'political economists of the age," &e., &e.; thus implying that it is only those who oppose State-aid who are pro found thinkers and far seeing political economists. Such logic is only egotism; aod, from its very absurdit}', requires no further comment from us. Next, he savs, "The question o.f State-aid will hardly be • seriously influence...

EXECUTION OF JOHN DUNN, FOR MURDER. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 31 March 1866

EXECUTION OF JOHN DUNN, FOR I MURDER. | » (From the Empire, j John Dunn, the notorious bushranger^ paid the penalty of his misdeeds yesterday raorning, upon the scaffold inside the walls of Darhughurst Gaol. At, nine o'clock precisely, the death-bell tolled, and the prisoner, .attended by the Revs. Father O'Dwyer and M'Oartny, came forth from his cell pinioned. These reverend; gentle men had been with him lVom eight o'clock, and it is satisfactory to know that, since his conviction, he received their ministra tions, and those of the Sisters of Charity, with meekness and sincere good will. As they walked towards the scaffold, the pri soner repeated in an audible voice the prayers after the Rev. Father M'Carthy. Owing to the wound received at his cap ture, the unfortunate man limped along painfully, but still he bore himself bravely up. and appeared as cool and collected as. any of the spectators. At the foot of the scaffold. Father M'Carthy bade him adieu, and he dragged himself up t...
