DARING ESCAPE FROM THE GAOL. -4-- (FRox GEELONG REGISTER or SATURDAT.) A Da?Ilo and partially successful escape from the Gaol was effected yesterday, by two prisoners, named respectively Reynolds and Thompson, under sentence of imprisonment, the former for violent assault, the latter for a robbery recently committed at the Queen's Head Hotel, tRyrie street. The two prisoners were assigned the office of cooks, and their cell was in the new wing of the building, the window being about 12 feet from the ground, and secured by iron stanchions. At six o'clock yesterday morning the men were seen in their cell by tae war. der, who noticed nothing peculiar, and ten minutes afterwards, as a proof of how nicely their plans must have been calculated, they were met on the road to Chilwell in com-. pany with a third man, not a prisoner, by Kirley, one of the turnkeys of the jail, who had just left home, and was proceeding to his morning duties. Subsequent examination of the window by which the es...

MISCELLANEOUS EXTRACTS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 28 September 1865

MISCELLANEOUS ]XTRACTS. Irs. FOi ~ THE SoUND AND SCs.--If there be one thing more than another which it behoves an Englishman to-do--ani thereif no use in disguising the truth-it is to holds. a tight rein over his aisposition to indulge in stimulating drinks. Now, however ap. parently a moderate indulgence in such po. tent liquids as port,. sherry, toddy, and brandy and water may be borne by many du. ring the colder months of the year, in the warmer ones the general use of such bever. ages is extremely noxious. During the for mer season, when every source of the dre. lopment of animal heat is often adivantageous to certain constitutions, and the preservation of the layer of fat beneath the skin is bene. ficial to all, a judicious employment of al. coholic liquids may be followed. But evea then caution is necessary in the daily use oa them as ordinary articles ofdict. After a free addiction to spirituous fluids the blood in the arteries has been found to apppo.ach that o the veins, t...

SHOCKING MURDER NEAR ECHUCA. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 28 September 1865

SHOCKING MURDER NEAR   ECHUCA. (FROM THE RIVERINE HERALD.)     It was reported to the Echuca police on Friday night that the body of a woman had been found murdered, lying with one arm over the threshold of a hut in Redman's paddock, about a mile from the railway sta- tion. The body was found by a drayman who reported the circumstance. Upon receipt of the intelligence troopers were immediately despatched, accompanied by Dr. Crossen, when the dreadful fact was established beyond a doubt, the unfortunate creature being found with her throat cut. The deed had evidently been perpetrated on the bed, and the body afterwards placed where it was found lying in a pool of blood, from which it was inferred that the deed was of recent occurrence. At present it would be obviously improper to publish all the facts which have come to our knowledge, but we may mention that the police are actively engaged. At present the whole affair is enveloped in mystry. It ...

QUEENSLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 28 September 1865

QUEENSLAND. MURDER AT CLEVELAND BAY. — On the even- ing of the 11th inst. a barbarous murder was committed at the new township of Towns- ville, the victim being a very inoffensive man. Mr. Black, J. P., rode to the scene, and find- ing the ruffian had made off, in the absence of any constable on the spot forwarded the warrant to Bowen. Thus, long before the po- lice can hope to reach Townsville, the fugi- tive will have put a safe distance between himself and his pursuers. It appears that on the evening in question Mr. Ross had "shooted" some brandy for the road party working on the main range, at the back of Cleveland Bay. A dispute afterwards arose between the overseer, Ryan, and a man named Byrnes. The quarrel, which com- menced in words, soon came to blows, and ultimately Ryan ran to his tent, took down a carbine, and declared he would shoot the first man that came near him. Byrnes also obtained a carbine, and approaching Ryan, said, "I'll shoot you ;" upon which Ryan fired at B...

CRICKET. -4-~-- On Saturday last the cricket season was opened at Kilmore by a scratch match betweeu the members of the United Cricket Club, the sides being chosen by the President and Vice-President. Prior to the nuitch some practice was taken by those who put in an early appearance, and considering the l'ngth of time since such an opportunity had been afforded then the pLty was very good. The weather during the morning and up to about two p.m. seemed 'hretaning, and some heavy showers fell, but despite this state of the weather and the day being a strict business one, a good number of players were present, but we must say the I spectators were not so numerous as might I have be n expected. Betw-.cl two an: d three o'clock choice of innings was tossed for and won by the President, who sent his men to the wickets. Tie gamne throughout was pretty well contested as may be seen from the scores which are as follows: P (C?IDK'NT S SIDE tt INUNINS. J u-ray, o . fL lu y .................. ...
