BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. January 2. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 17 January 1880

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL OOBBE8PONDENT. .Tanuftrr 2. To the "brief madness" of Christmas has huoccedod tho still briefer joys of the New year. Both holidays lave this year been favoured by particularly cool weather, so tool that I am convinced there are some scorch ing days in store for us, just to balance the account. You know bow we manage to see (he old year out here. On the fated night some people repair to church and a great many to the public-houses. The boys make the darkness hideous by firing off crackers and beating frantically on kerosine tins, and they seek for more light by making bonfires on all available open spacos. Ab twelve o'clock approaches the public-bouso frequenters be come mora drunk, and fights are more and more frequent. The church goers, it is to be presumed, pray more fervently. The most lugubrious bell of St. John's peal tollB dis mally. Twelve strikes. A discordant din pervades the town. Half-grown lads rash in yelling mobs to houses in the rem...

SECOND DAY. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 17 January 1880

I SECOND DAY. A few of the certainties of the first day having being upset, the public began to enter into the spirit of racing, The totalisator, which had been almost neglected during the first day, was hardly distinguishable from chalk marks The programme opened with tlie Steeplechase, for which three noddled, and the public were treated to as fine a piece of steeplechase tiding as has been our lot to witness, the fcnccH being negotiated at racing pace. The excitement culminated when the five competitors cantered past for the Mid summer Handicap. Pink aud black colors were the only ones aloft, and the majority of the public were following the stable's lead, and backing the big weight at even money against the field. Recovery gave his admirers a great run for their money, but failed to concede the weight to Theodore, who beat him a couple of lengths at the fiuibh, amidst a scene o£ great excitement, l'he grass»fed races filled splendidly, and afforded consider able amusement, our v...

SPORTING NEWS. Blackall Midsummer Races. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 17 January 1880

SPORTING NEWS. Biack&ll Midsummer Races. As for as the attendance of the ouUidc public was concerned, it cannot truthfully be said that the Midsummer Meeting was & groat success. The programme was a good one, the raccs were well arranged, and the prises no mean ones, but owners of horses nom inated out of the district hung back when the lime of acceptance arrived. This is all the more a pity as the races were postponed from Christmas time in order to give the owners of horses a chance to win at Isisford and Muttaburra. However, though the fields were small, the quality of the nags was first rate, and a few close finishes showed that the handicaps had been well arranged. The totalisator was not made use of to any very great extent, the majority of those engaged in betting being of a class who are not gener ally provided with the material for ready money transactions, The bookmakers were in great force, and judging by the pleased expression of their faces at the close ...
