FIVE ACRES OF GLASS Merchandise Mart, Chicago The new Merchandise Mart just recently completed 'in Chicago is an amazing building. It is claimed to be the largest commercial building in the world and contains .4,000,000 sq. ft. of rentable floor space, each floor having an area of an acre, the total area being about 100 acres. ' For those who like statistics here is a verit able treat; number of bricks used 29,000,000; 380 miles of wire to take current to 30,000 lighting fixtures; 'five acres of glass for 5500 windows were needed, also 40 miles of plumb ing pipes and 6i miles of plate glass in show windows. ;; ; A few of these jobs and the ^ building in dustry in Australia would be on its feet.1- ?

DUNLOP PERDRIAU FLOOR COVERING What Next? [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 10 September 1930

DUNLOP PERDRIAU FLOOR I COVERING ? What Next? Everyone knows the Dunlop Perdriau Rub ber Co. Ltd., and therefore interest in the floor , covering of rubber supplied by that firm Will be general. That these rubber floors should be of, suffici ently attractive designs to induce their use in banks, hotels, hospitals, theatres-, dental cham bers, and departmental stores, could be easily understood, but to lay one in a dancing studio, as has been done, makes many of us wonder. The strong points about a Dunlop Perdriau 'Rnhhpr flnnr havp been thai if is noiseless. non-slipping, sanitary, easily cleaned and does not crack, and it is said the stretch ing tendency has now been overcome. All these essentials, when grouped with the fact of its extreme durability, are all important, in a busy city building. But 1 in addition some of the designs are really artistic and give, a different aopearance to the ar-artment. not only because of the variety of colours or the differ ent combinations, but b...

MADE IN ENGLAND The B.G.E. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 10 September 1930

MADE IN ENGLAND The B.G.E. Naturally eve^ Australian would prefer that his necessaries should be wholly produced and made in this country, but' failing this thc»e potent words 'made in England' mean a lot. ~ Under this class comes a wide range of goods offered by .the British General Electric Co. Ltd. at Magnet House, M04-1141 Clarence Street, and - in every other State. By a well got up pamphlet which we notice was printed in Sydney; we obtain facts relating to. several different types of electric cookers at '.widely varying prices, as well as many more ' electric fires for room warming, etc. Some of the designs humour our fancies, such, for example, as the 'Sunbeam' electric fire, which is described asfa reflector fire, fitted with imitation coal and flickering device giving a realistic coal fire effect. As to the cookers,, they seem to cater for families- of different sizes and thereby save a lot of waste. There is one qualification that applies to all ^ these electric cookers, i...

ARMCO LITERATURE Advertising With An Appeal [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 10 September 1930

ARM CO LITERATURE Advertising With An Appeal When we think of Armco we picture a quality of pure iron which the makers, the American Rolling Mill Co., claim is much more durable than steel; but by means of a well got up ?monthly journal, called the Armco Bulletin, we learn a lot about the inside anatomy of the company which is full of suggestions— just nnvv. in nartirnlar. We learn that -various companies merged, or were purchased, until eventually the. American Rolling Mill Company came officially into existence in January, 1900. At present there are 130 Armco men who have had from 25 years or more of continuous service.( The policy of the company is expressed by a state ment 'Armco Spirit is a comprehensive vital force, which finds' expression in the practical application of policies builded on a platform of Christian principles in ?which.' selfish pur pose has* no place.' In discussing qualifications we read 'you have not learned anything in your college course that was not known...

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OFFICES [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 10 September 1930

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OFFICES Yesterday saw the fulfilment of yet another great step in the Presbyterian Church of Aus tralia, for the new Assembly Hall was officially opened amidst great enthusiasm. The Presbyterian Church in Australia dates back to 1803 when the first' church was built in the Hawkesbury district. Old Scots Church on Church Hill followed in 1826 and saw many forward strides in its life of 100 years and 100 days, till it handed the torch of progress to this fine new building. . There can be . no doubt that that great man, John Dunmore Lang, whose memory is per petuated in Wynyard Square opposite to this building, would be very happy were he alive to-day to see these happenings; as it is, we seem to see a look of satisfaction glow on his graven features. This building will be reviewed in 'Building' on the completion of the remainder of the ? floors.

REAL ESTATE THE REAL ESTATE INSTITUTE Its Origin, History and Objects By W. F. Goyder (Continued from last issue) Haying at length become established as a live organisation, the Board proceeded to enter, the- long road necessary to be travelled to achieve the objects for which it had come into existence. The members had determined from the -first that the 'small man'' and the 'hi# man' should be terms no longer used, and that all should receive equal consideration. As evidence of this, intention it is interesting to note the personnel of the first Board, viz.. A. W. S 'Gregg (Messrs. Richardson and Wrench),' Chairman; Messrs. R. STANTON HOUSE Another Fine Contribution to Sydney's Architecture [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 10 September 1930

STANTON HOUSE Another Fine Contribution to Sydney's Architecture Although Messrs. Stairiton and Simi h/d. moved into their new building last week, it may really 'be said that it wis .not ' officially opened till last Monday, ' whin 'lie . 'first sale ?was held at 1.1 a.m. This firm, which started at Summer Hill in 18S2 and transferred- its head office to 129 Pitt Street in 1911, th-juyh ?it had a branch in Sydney for man;/ y-c.a\ra previously, should feel very proud of its new home, which will take its placc amongst thq many other fine commercial buildings of 1929 1930. The entire design and decoration of the building are. cast in the 'art nouveau'' mould, which is very interesting and refreshing. The main facade is dominated by a large entrance door, which gives way to the main office space, where modern lighting fixtures and decoration cause many heads to raise in. wonderment. _ Mr. Richard Stanton's office is in (rustic brown, with inlay and veneered appointments and doors of old...
