®ar SmhttK $«tt»r. Pprom our own correspondent;] 9th July, 1885. Xhbrb'8 no mistaking the leading event of the pa9t month ; nor is it likely that it will be an overlooked item in the pages of Australian history, and there are more improbable things than its record as the ,Uwn of that, at present somewhat dreamy vision. I a united Anglo-Saxonism, so strong in her conscious I might that at her word the oppressor shall cease I to do evil ; the aggressor shall stay his hand ; the I glorious civilization of her laws and the beneficence ? following her Christianity shall lighten the dark I places of the earth, and peace and plenty fill its I borders, as the waters cover the face of the deep. ? There, that's a relief to one's pent up feelings, after ? reading the bewitching eloquence of a Dalley, the ? chaste and terse sentences of our Governor, the ? ponderous and telling periods of the Chief Justice, ? and the warm and affectionate remarks of our I visitors. We have had, however, nearly ...

A BAD BOY'S DIARY. CHAPTER XX. THE WAY HE EARNED HI8 PONY. There isn't a sole about the house but me and Bess xcepting the help, for papa and mamma have gone to spend a week with Lil, and the doctor an his bride are at the hotel. Mamma said she did hope Geororie would keep out of mischief while they were iway — she should fret about him all the time, but I ashured her she need not wurry — I would be as good and quiet as tho day was long, go to school reglar, come home straight as soon as scool was out, mind my sister and behave generly. Papa said if .1 suckseded he would think about bying me that canadin pony that the butcher is bound he shall take for $ forty (40) dollars, I would rather have a pony than 6 bicycles. I have dremed of that pony evry night since the butcher told me about htm — he is a little buty, I shall try my level best to be as good as pie. MAITLAND. j [PROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.,! For a long time past I have been promising to send you a little Hunter River gossip, but have been hindered by various things. I do not now know whether the items I send will be of much interest to jour readers. Farming is carried on in this district under 'circuinstanocs so widely differing from those in the Western district that 'there are not many things in common between oil* farmers and yours. 1 noticed on Bathurst Plains farms running into hundreds of acres, and the use of two and three furrow ploughs. Here many of the* farms range from twenty to fifty or sixty acres on the heavy alluvial flats, and I have not seen one double furrow plough hi the district. Refits with you arc from say twelve shillings to tw?nt}-fivc shillings per acre per annum ; while with us* on the flats, as high as three pounds ten is paid in some instances. But an acre here is better than several acres on the plains. Our climate is much more dependable also than ...
