Jimmy Swaggart still preaching; few are listening [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 10 December 1998

Jimmy Swaggart still preaching; few are listening By Joe Mathews The Baltimore Sun BATON ROUGE, La. - The Rev. Jimmy Swaggart plays a scale on his grand piano and slides off the bench to grab the microphone. "Praise Jesus!" he says, launching a spellbinding two-hour sermon, which he interrupts twice to record 30-second promotional spots for the TV version. Swaggart yells. He collapses to the floor. He recounts a conversation with God. Seven times, he abruptly breaks into tears. And he lays hands on a partially paralyzed young man. "Jesus will heal you because he can heal you," says Swaggart, weeping again. "I know we have sinned ... but Jesus, please, please help him." The tears resemble those that fell from Swaggart's face in 1988, when the tele-evangelist, caught with a prostitute, told his congregation, "I have sinned, my Lord." Ten years later, everywhere Swaggart looks, his eyes see the damage caused by his indiscretion in a New Orleans motel room. To his left and right...

Berkeley to clamp down on homeless street youths [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 10 December 1998

Berkeley to clamp down on homeless street youths By Edward Wong and Maria L. LaGanga Los Angeles Times BERKELEY, Calif. - Here in the land of free speech and the home of the brazen, a City Council of legendary liberalness is poised to choose capitalists over street kids. Tuesday night, Berkeley's council is expected to ratify an ordinance aimed at taking the city's colorful main commercial streets back from bands oflvomeJless street youths and their dogs who have turned parts of Telegraph and Shattuck avenues into urban campgrounds. "What we're trying to do is en sure sidewalk accessibility, said Council Member Polly Armstrong, who co-authored the pioposed ordinances. "We continue to bean extremely liberal city, and we're proud of that. But there's a difference between liberal and lawless." The proposed rules - which bubbled up from complaints by business owners about aggressive panhandling and open drug dealing - would prohibit people from sleeping or lying on Telegraph and...

UNICEF: Illiteracy dooms 1 billion to poverty [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 10 December 1998

UNICEF: Illiteracy dooms 1 billion to poverty By John M. Goshko The Washington Post UNITED NATIONS - One billion people - nearly a sixth of humanity - will enter the 21 st century doomed to poverty because they are unable to read a book, write their names or master other skills necessary to hold a job, UNICEF reported Tuesday. "The consequences of illiteracy are profound - and even potentially lifethreatening. For millions and millions of children, education is literally a matter of life and death," UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy wrote in the agency's annual report on illiteracy, "The State ofthe World's Children 1999." In underdeveloped countries, an estimated 130 million children, about 40 percent of the elementary school age population, either never enter school or drop out, the report says. Of that total, 73 million are girls. Even in many industrialized countries, 15 percent to 20 percent are functionally illiterate, unable to understand a job application, much...

Brownie Mary goes Naked [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 10 December 1998

Brownie Mary goes Naked by Dakota Dinnen staff writer It doesn't matter how much money you've got. It doesn't matter if you're broke or not. It doesn't matter how much you can shell out... you'll buy it; once you've heard Brownie Mary's Naked. Brownie Mary and their longawaited album come out ofthe Pittsburgh alternative scene. Since the release of Naked, the entire nation has been able to take a bite out of this Brownie. The lead singer, Kelsey Barber sings that once you've seen her naked, nothing will matter anymore. She sings you will see right through her, but her voice and lyrics (all of which she had a hand in writing except for one song: Memphis) are more likely to turn your head. With the Fierceness ofthe feral screams of Gwen Stefani and the smoothness of Jewel's lullaby singing, Kelsey sings about would-be romances, self-reflections, America's collapse under the superficial pressure of the media, and inspirational changes that people sometimes have to force themsel...

Behrend celebrates Kwanzaa [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 10 December 1998

Behrend celebrates Kwanzaa By Danielle Marshall staff writer Some families celebrate Christmas, while others celebrate Hanukkah. The Behrend family celebrated Kwanzaa, an event sponsored by the Association of Black Collegians (ABC), on Sunday, December 6, 1998. Okay, so you know Kwanzaa isn't Christmas, but what is it? Kwanzaa is a non-religious, African-American holiday. In KiSwahili, one of Africa's major languages and the chosen language ofthe holiday, Kwanzaa means "first fruits." Celebrated first in 1966 by its cre ator, Dr. Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa is based on African harvest celebrations and the Nguzo Saba, or seven principles. These principles, a set of ideals, developed by Karenga, are: Unity (Umoja), Self Determination (Kujichagulia), Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima), Cooperative Economics (Ujamma), Purpose (Nia), Creativity (Kuumba), and Faith Imani). Each day of Kwanzaa emphasizes a different principle. One of the symbols of the holiday is a candle hold...

Top ten films of 1998 [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 10 December 1998

Top ten films of 1998 by Micheal Coursey staff writer The most sensible thing for a film reviewer to do as a year-end article would be a Top Ten Films ofthe Year list. Normally I would have seen three times as many movies, but quite honestly, I was a little low on money this summer. I have never been a fan of the big disaster movies, and this year seemed to have one after another. 1 didn't see Armageddon, Deep Impact. or any of the other doomsday- type movies. I have however compiled a list and short synopsis of the films I did see: I. Saving Private Ryan. This is a Steven Spielberg production about the D-Day invasion starring Tom Hanks. This should earn Hanks a third Academy Award. It has a type of realism in the battle scenes that will make even hardened war veterans wince. 2. Rounders is a film starring Matt Damon, John Turturro, and Ed Norton. Matt Damon is a struggling law student who has trouble staying away from the poker table and the easy money he makes there. Ed No...

Broncos begin to feel the pressures of perfection [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 10 December 1998

Broncos begin to feel the pressures of perfection Put Of Bounds JASQNSNYDER For the past month, I've tried to avoid the issue. For weeks, I've put it off. For days I've gone back and forth in whether or not I should actually do it. And even now I am getting a funny feeling in my stomach as I am in the process of playing games with history. I am officially, not by choice but by necessity, "jinxing" the Denver Broncos in their bid for only the second undefeated season in NFL history. And now, in my world of superstitions, I can only cross my fingers and hope that the Broncos can trounce all over those evil spirits and write their names in the NFL record books. At 13-0, the Broncos are considered the biggest story in the NFL this season. With each week that passes they continue to meet each challenge their opponents have thrown at them. But the road to perfection is steadily getting more and more difficult. This past weekend appeared to have the makings for an upset. Ente...
