OUR FARM [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 December 1884

OUR FARM ___ ¦ WAYNE , DTJ PAGE CO ., ILL . By P . H . JACOBS . [ In this Department we report the results of the operations of all machinery , implements or other articles sent to our farmfie they favorable or not , and our readers may expect a truthful report of the same . Anything Intended for this department should he addressed to the Farm , Field and Fireside Experimental Farm , Wayne , Du Page Co ., III ., and forwarded via 2 C . W . Ry . —FD , ] November gives but little opportunity for farm operations , and hence we are no exception in that respect . We have taken advantage , however , of the propitious fall weather , and kept the teams busy at the plows ; trusting to the pulverizing influences of the frost to assist in getting the soil in the best possible condition for spring work . The fall is an excellent time during which to haul out the manure and prepare the ground . One of the most serious mistakes made by most farmers is that of postponing the spreading of the manur...

THE FAT STOCK SHOW . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 December 1884

THE FAT STOCK SHOW . The seventh annual Fat Stock Show was held in Chicago during last month , and it is conceded by all that the display of fat stock exceeded that of any previous exhibition , not only in regard to numbers but in the character of the stock . The attendance was excellent , and it is safe to say that the exhibition was a grand success in every respect , and the managers are entitled to the highest credit for their excellent management of the show while in progress . Every endeavor was made to select the best and most impartial judges , and everyone feels satisfied that the awards with but few exceptions were placed in the direction they belonged , if individuals are capable of so doing . The competition between the different breeds was close , and narrowed down . to the Herefords and Shorthorns . The Herefords would no doubt have badly beaten the Shorthorns but for the Canadian white steer , Clarence , who captured all the prizes in his class and the grand sweepstake...

Sulphur for Sheep . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 December 1884

Sulphur for Sheep . MRS . M . A . JANES , NEWTON , N . H . In your valuable paper this month you request anyone having experience with sulphur for sheep to give an account of it to you . Last winter my husband bought a small flock of very poor , scabby , tiokey sheep , and it was with difficulty we kept them alive until after shearing , as they were in very bad condition after they were sheared , and their fleece was very small , as some of them were almost entirely bare , caused by scab and ticks . My husband placed them ln a shed near the house . One day I went out and the thought came to me that , unknown to anyone , I would try sulphur . I sent and bought five pounds , then took a pound to each sheep and rubbed them all over the body with it so that they were completely yellow with it . There being no wool , it was easily rubbed into the skin . I then gave them some to eat in their grain , as we were feeding them a very little shorts and meat . When my husband looked at them he ...
