EPITORIVL . ' < [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1876

EPITORIVL . < The ILLINI may be expected to utter a few remarks upon an intended step , which deeply concerns the University , its students , and all its various connections ; namely , the resignation of the Regent . Much has been already said by the press at large , and much has been unwisely said . There are always those who stand ready to misinterpret the deeds and measures of men , to pass premature judgments and build what they consider large stories upon idle and meaningless reports . Conjectures hastily formed , unwisely formed , foundationless , never issue from stable minds , wise in thought and purpose ; and they are mischievous in their results , frequently calumniating when no cause for calumniation exists . One of the most important of all important things for a man to learn , and especially for a man who ad dresses the public mind , is to maintain his silence until he can speak the living truth ; a rare characteristic , but one of established excellence . We...

ILLINI CORRESPONDENCE . NEVADA—ITS MINES , SILVER , CHINESE , & c . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1876

ILLINI CORRESPONDENCE . NEVADA—ITS MINES , SILVER , CHINESE , & c . BY HOTE . To the superficial eye the entire state of Nevada is nothing more than a vast expanse of sagebrush plains and barren mountains . The soil offers little encouragement to vegetation , and without an expensive system of irrigation , agriculture of any description is an impossibility . None of the wealth of the state lies exposed to the eyes , and can only be found by delving down deep into the mother earth . Yet wonderful as are the mineral productions , every day but confirms the conviction that but little is known of the extent and value of her mineral deposits . Not only are the most precious metals found in untold millions , but the less valuable metals also exist in quantities which , but for the overwhelming deposits of gold and silver , would be sufficient to attract prospecters and capitalists . In addition to the precious metals , iron , salt , and lead h ? ve long been known to exist in ...

A WALK IN THE WOODS- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1876

A WALK IN THE WOODS- N . B . C . My dear schoolmates , have you ever strolled through a quiet wood on a bright and beautiful summer day , when the old Sun was enchanting all nature to joy and gladness by a flood < if her life giving rays ? If you have , then let me lead you in fancy through a pleasant scene which I shall attempt to picture to you . Tis a lovely afternoon in the month of May . All nature has just been refreshed by a pleasant shower . I have yielded to the desire to enjoy a quiet walk , and have strolled leisurely into a delightful wood . A lazy breeze is rustling the leaves overhead , causing their shadows to play fantastic pantomimes with the sun s rays on the green carpeting be neath my feet . As I stroll along , I forget all the cares and troubles connected with the world of air , and enjoy a quiet revelry with nature . Everything about feels full of joy and gladness . The brook by which I walk is filled with sweetly murmuring spirits , laughing and sin...

A REALM OF RELICS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1876

A REALM OF RELICS . What lesson of wisdom not learned Of the past ? Whose thoughts ever turned , Midst struggles for truth , to ages unnumbered ? The passions hope , the souls desire , where slumbered They , ere rudely woke to mouldering prisons of cold clay ? Go ! Ask the strange stars , that light the dark skies , As the heart is illumined by dim , tender eyes , To teach you the tale of their beauty and youth : To show thev are fragments of what was once truth . Few tales can be older ; none have language so new . Each child of the earth that plays at our feet , Has its legends of wonder ; its songs , sad and sweet . The sea hath sequestered worlds of delusion ! Dust is the ruin of spheres in confusion ! Lo ! perfume s the the death sigh of flowers ! An image is sno » v . What words but serve poorly To paint a man s life ? Surely Emblems they are of mind void of melo iy ; Heart without harmony ; soul reft of sancity . Well ! who knows what he is , and knowing can tell ? The songs ...

PRAIRIE ROADS AND THEIR IMPROVEMENT . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1876

PRAIRIE ROADS AND THEIR IMPROVEMENT . BY c . G . E . OF however much value the rail-roads may be to our country , it is certain that they carinot benefit the people to their utmost capacity until supplimented b y a better system of wagon roads . The greatest obstacle to securing good roads upon the prairie is mud . Indeed the great bugbear which , to a great extent , has retarded the settlement of the West by people of the Eastern states has been mud ; but the peculiar richness of the soil which in its natural condition is capable of producing the principal grains in abundance has presented attractions beyond every disadvantage . In the improvement of roads we must take into consideration two things . First , the improvements must be guaged b y the needs and means of the community . Second , a good prairie road cannot be made at once . The first is often disregarded b y engineers and others who are accustomed to manage projects which look to a large business and large profits , and ...

RECOLLECTIONS . ( Continued from April . ) [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1876

RECOLLECTIONS . ( Continued from April . ) Our ride from Verviers to Cologne was not without interest ; p leased but not intoxicated with Bavarian scenery , and wines , our thoughts rambled away to Colonial times , this third of July . The Declaration of our National Independence , though a mighty woof in the web of affairs , has not destroyed our affinities to these countries fcnd peoples . Bismark s flattering picture of the German Empire , added to humiliations and reverses , had much to do with the public sentiment of these simple , honest-looking people , and hence they were drawn into the war against France . They led the siege against Strasburg , and were victorious ; we pity , but cannot condemn or feel proud of their victories . The vintage upon which they pride themselves was transmuted into bayonets and blood in 1870 , but through the industry of women has been restored to native beauty . As we tasted of the delicious fruits , which are brought to the cars in tiny baskets...

FOREVER . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1876

FOREVER . Yepass ^ O days of youth ! ye dwell not long . Thy sunny joys- give place to elder cares , And in the shadows of thy form there throng A multitude of hopes or deep despairs . Thy fleeting glimmer in the dark of time , Serene , divine ; thy strange and rapid flight , Conduct the soul to thoughts and deeds sublime . Its pathway mark to upper realms of light . And still ye flow , O years of middle age ! And radiate a golden glow of thought , Thy great and fruitful truths , thy precepts sage 7 By long and lonely meditations bought . Full soon the mellow light of rip ning years Is shed upon the bosom of the soul ; O er which , creating joys and hopes and fears , The tides of time in silent grandeur roll . At length , with disolutions throes oppressed , Mid flowing tears , harsh strifes and phantom glees , The light of life sinks fading down to rest As sets the sun mid murmur of the seas . Beyond the purple tinge of eventide , Beyond the hills that close the gates of day , The p...
