m w Crops in Jackson Co ., Iowa . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 9 May 1868

m w Crops in Jackson Co ., Iowa . There has been a larger breadth sown to spring wheat than ever before in Jackson Co ., Iowa . I hear the same report from Muscatine and Scott counties . The fine weather we had in March was • improved by the farmers in patting in their wheat—those that had their grounds prepared in the Pall , which every farmer should have , that intends to sow spring wheat , as he can improve the earliest opportunity . Early sown wheat stands much the best chance for a crop . Onr field of wheat of 40 acres looks green and fine . Some farmers sowed as high as 160 acres in March . They are also preparing to put in large fields of corn . We think our fruit is not injured as yet by the frost . B . C . BLATEB . Maguoketa , Iowa .

Letter from England , [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 9 May 1868

Letter from England , LONDON , April 13 , 1888 . The public mind has been much occupied recently by the Parliamentary discussions on the Irishh church . The result of those discussions will be that the Irish church will be abolished , and Government aid being withdrawn from all religious denominations _ iey will be placed on a footing of equality toward the State and each other , such as now exists in the United States . In a country so conservative as Great Britain , it indicates a great advance in the direction ol liberalism when favoritism in matters ecclesiastical is overthrown and the diff rent religious sects are treated with even-handed justice . During the discussion on the Irish church several members of tne royal family were present ; frequent allusions were made during the debate to the Sovereign , and it was hinted that when the spirit of destruction conld go so far as to abolish the Irish church , which had endured for throe centuries , the tenure of the crown itsulf wa...

Farming in Germany . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 9 May 1868

Farming in Germany . BAYARD TAYLOR writes from Gotha , Germany , to the N . Y . Tribune the following account of farming in that region : Any comparison of the agriculture of this part of Europe with that of tbe United States ought properly to be accompanied by a running explanation of the difference of climate , season , and atmospheric influences . The succession of field labor depends altogether on these agencies , and the system of farming must , therefore , to a certain extent , be dependent upon them . For instance , the first harvest , that of the rye crop , is rarely cut here before the first week In August , while wheat ripens from the 10 th to the 15 th of the same month , sometimes even later . In Northern- Spain , in lat 43 deg . I found the wheat cut , last Summer , before tbe end of May ; here iu lat . 51 dcg . it is from ten to twelve weeks later . The same difference of latitude with us ( say between Charleston and Philadelphia ) , does Uot advance the harvest more t...

« m » Snow in the Sierra Nevada . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 9 May 1868

« m » Snow in the Sierra Nevada . The Buffalo Commercial Advertiser quotes from a letter of John Corning : We are now getting ready to open our line from Cisco to the Summit ( 13 miles ) . Tbe snow onthatportion of the track which was laid last full , averages about 10 feet in depth . We have about 500 Chinamen at work now Urenching it out , and expect to increase the force to 1 , 000 during the week . We shall , after trenching it , leave it for a few days for the sun to operate upon , when we shall put one of the large snow-plows with eight of our large engines behind it . I never saw snow ( to speak of ) until I came here . In the valley we are having uncomfortably warm weather . The flowers are in blossam , —in fact flowers are in blossom here all the year round . The plains to the base of the mountains are covered with the most lovely wild flowers you ever saw , and are very fragrant ; and yet within sixty miles , we find snow on an average ten feet deep on the level I I came i...
