April Best Month on Record . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
April Best Month on Record . Berkshire breeders have reason to be enthusiastic over the unprecedented demand tor our favorite breed during the last few months . The best barometer aa to the demand is the business received by the Record Association of the breed . The month of April was the largest in number of entries received in the history of the Association . During April there was recorded by the American Berkshire Association 1300 pedigrees , which was 100 more than the previous high mark of January , 1907 . This increase is more marked than that of 1907 , however , because the entries for the last four months have been unusually large .

He Has Attained His Great Am bition . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
He Has Attained His Great Am bition . The ambition of every true breeder is to breed better sires than his original foundation stock . Our good friend , Mr . W . S . Corsa , Gregory Farm , White Hall , III ., displayed excellent judgment and a far-sighted policy when he began his Berkshire operations with Masterpiece and Baron Duke 50 th . He has mated sons and daughters of these great boars or daughters of one of these boars t . o the other great boar until he is producing a type of Berkshire that is extremely popular and one that we believe will commend itself to the attention of all thoughtful and progressive breeders . The type that is being evolved at Gregory Farm is the quick maturing kind , good headed , heavy hammed , short pasterns , good feet and bone , combining extreme quality with size . Much is being said about the proper type of Berkshire and Gregory Farm has been in a position the last four or five years to develop that type of Berkshire that is meeting the popular d...

Good Manners . W . N . Tobie . You boys have all doubtless read of how Sir Wlalter Raleigh won the favor of proud Queen Elizabeth by taking off his coat and spreading it over a muddy place for the Queen to walk on . Well , that was an illustration of a great law in life that it pays to have good manners . We all admire a gentleman . But if I should ask you what is a gentleman , you might not at once find your tongue . Why , a gentleman is a gentle man . Thats about the Best definition one can give . This word gentleman has an interesting history . The old Latin word gens meant a race or tribe . The adjective gentilis meant belonging to a tribe , or family , especially , a prominent and influential family . Then it came to mean , in the old French word gentil , having the qualities of a well-born person , polite and noble . In England , therefore , a gentleman means , first of all , a man of noble birth . But today its widest and best meaning is one who has the gentle manners that on...
The Right Type to Breed . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
The Right Type to Breed . As this subject is up for discussion before the Berkshire breeders , I want to say something on the line of type before we get into the discussions so deep that we dont know who or what we are and what we are really trying to breed . To me the decision of a stock yard judge doesnt stand for very much from a breeding standpoint , for the simple reason that he doesnt know , nor does he care one cent what it costs to produce a car load of fat barrows , but with me as a breeder and you as a feeder , it does matter and matters much . With the city butcher , who is furnishing the choice cuts to best trade , it matters much . He knows the difference between a car load of fat barrows and a car load of rough stags . Now wait a minute , you who read and know that stags sold about $ 2 , 00 a hundred higher than barrows not 60 days ago on the Chicago market ( I guess they were the type the packer wanted ) . A year ago Stags were $ 1 . 00 a hundred less than barrows and...
A New York Firm ' s Idea As to the Proper Type of Berk -shires . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
A New York Firm s Idea As to the Proper Type of Berkshires . Dundee , N . i . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —We have read with interest , recent articles in The Berkshire World regarding the proper Berkshire type . We have very pronounced opinions upon this subject ourselves , demanding plenty of size , at the same time requiring a short nose , broad head ; broad between the ears and eyes , and the conformation and appearance which usually accompany such a head . An expert horse judge will look at the head first in judging a horse . Its general countenance , breath between the eyes , etc ., not so much because of the attractive appearance of an intelligent head but because it indicates something . Large , angular , peaked faced Berkshires are common ; so are the small fancy headed dumplings . We all get too many of each kind , no matter how careful we are in our matings . But the great , big , growthy Berkshires , mellow , with general conformation , so often...
