lion at its market price, thus turning the profit arising into the treasury instead of letting it go to private persons. It also provides a commission to confer with the European nations that havea double standard, to see whether a definite ratio of value between the two metals can be agreed upon. It pro-. vides also that the holders of silver coin may deposit in sums of not less than ten dollars in the United States treasury, and may receive instead certificates receivable for customs, taxes and public dues. This pro vision is an amendment of the House bill whieb allowed the holders of un coined silver to deposit it in the treasury and receive certificates, and which therefore allowed the profits arising from the depreciation of sil ver to go to private citizens, instead of to the government, as is provided in the Senate bill. NonTHRor has been triumphantly confirmed as United States District Attorney for South Gatrolina. This will set the minds of the other aspirants at rest. NEW YORK CITY was recently seized with a spasm of economy and re duced her expenses by cutting down the salary of teachers, -while the salaries of political offices were left unchanged. As it is, the city expends $3,399,000 for schools. WE WERE TOLD that the passage of a silver bill would depress the bonds and chase gold out of the country. Now for a fresh howl from the "visiting statesmen." HoAR, BUnNSIDE, Matthows, Cono ver and Patterson were the only Republicans who voted to confirm Northrop as district attorney. Edmunds made a violent speech against hin and was intensely dis gusted with the result. THE ATTEMPT to fire Mr. Grigsby's store at Ridgeway is an unusual event for Fairfield. Heretoforo the county has been peculiarly exempt from crimes of a serious naturo; and the first out-cropping of this spirit should bo mot with a determination to repress it immediately.
