...LOCAL fOPfCS j *. Last Monday afternoon abortt three o'clock tire was discovered in the wind mill at the sawmill and lumber yard of the St. Paul and Taeoma Lum ber company. The mill is inclosed with a tank at the top. The fire caught in the casing from the smoke stack of the steam engine used for sawing wood in the yards. The tire was not extinguished until it had burned away the tank at the top. There was a strong wind blowing at the time and as the fire was situated amid lumber piles and sheds it was tea ted that it might spread. The incident tends to strengthen the pre valent idea of the permanent organi zation of fire company with apparatus and fixtures to strengthen and protect against this danger which menace* us at all tinier. v The gate receipts of the concert entertainment given by the Hitzville Band Thursday ev ning was $88. The ladies of Lift Unity Club served icecream during the afternoon and evening and shared the profits with the band b ys which was about $25 each. ...

...LOCAL TOPICS The first annual Flag day picnic given by the citizens of l'alia at In County, on Friday, June 14, was the occasion of a very pleasant and enjoyable time. The little town was gay in Ii» ,s and pat riotic colors and the citizen? extended the glad hand to everyone and wore a broad and extensive smile meantime. The sports of the day were hugely eu joyed by all. The band was in at tendance and played at intervals dur ing the racing and bull game. A well attended dance was given ill the C n tennial Mill Co.'s warehouse in the evening. Altogether the Paha people are to be congratulated on the public spirit and energy manifested by her broad hearted constituents. White, a teacher who con ducted a term of 6chool at Rocky Couleo la?t year, is fouud to have forget! warrants amounting, so far, to $1,136 on the following districts in " this county. Dis. No 4. $310"; No. 13, 9396; No. 27, $100. These war rants were purchased by the Spokane Eastern Trust Co, and last Saturday wore forwarded to the First National Bank here for collection, when the fraud was first discovered. White was reported having perished in a hotel fire in Chicago a short time since; but the rumor was probably given the start by White himself, in order to shield himself from the crime which he was momentarily ex pecting to come to the surface. Oliver M. Lee will immediately be gin the erection of a two story, fire proof building on the south-west half of lot five, block nine, between his saloon and the Wieand jewelry establishment.
