It is the opinion of the American Consul that not less than 30 000 perished, and still, at tha latest dates, the carniral of death had not eeased, thoagh the deaths daily were considerably diminished. Bat fourteen Americana have fallen victims. A cor respondent of the New York Herald gfoi the following : The most extraordinary tales are now being narrated by eye-witnesses of the scenes related, and continually fiudicg their way to the public prints, and may one day form a ghastly "literature of the plague."
