THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. C. WARNOCK, EDITOR. THE DEFEAT OF RAYMOND. The telegraph brings the news from Pierre that John B. Raymond has been most ingloriously defeated and the prin cipal cause ot such a result is not to be found in any dereliction of duty on his part while in congress the last two years for he has been a conscientious and con sistent representative of the whole of Da kota. Neither is the cause of his defeat to be found in want of ability on his part for he obtained more for the territory than any of his predecessors. Nor is it found in any want of confidence in his integrity for even bis most bitter enemies never assailed him on that point. The cause that led to this unhappy result to his canvass and seemingly ungrateful at titude of hiaconstituents must be laid at the door of his "fool friends," and if tbeie ever was man so situated that he could from the bottom of his heart pray to be "delivered from the hands of his friends" that man was John B. Raymond. They were...

If the railroad rates of transportation Were the same as in 1865, the price of wheat in Chicoga based on the parity of New York quotations would be about fifty cents per bushel. In that period the rate has declined about 65 per cent. The average charges on lake and canal from Chicago to New York in August were 5.96 cents for wheat and 4.77 cents for corn, which are about 30 per cent, of the rates charged in 1872. Among the papers of general econom io interest read at a late meeting of the American Association for the Ad vancement of Science, was one by Mr. John Biddu...

In San Francisco, Ang. 14, four Chi* nese actors were before Jndge Hoflman, on a writ of habeas corpus, to decide whether they fall within the terms ol the law excluding Chinese laborers, but admitting actors and artists. fha four claimed that they had been em ployed previous to 1881, when they re^ turned to China, at the Chinese theatei on Jackson steeet, near Dupont. VOL. VI -NO. 16 THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. C. W A KNOCK, EDITOR. SABBATH OR SUNDAY. THE Savior was reproached for dese crating the Sabbath day by those who formed their ideas and opinions of its prop er observance from the Mosaic law which was up to and at that time the law of God's government of man. But the Bavior mod lfied the generally accepted opinion as to the proper observance of that day, and in his resurrection abrogated the Mosaic Sabbath entirely and instituted in its stead the day we now observe as Sunday. The the term Sunday is of heathen origin des ignating the day of the week on which the Anglo Baron heathen worshipped the aun and from that took its name. In this as well as in a great many other things we are not so far removed from heathen ism as we flatter ourselves we are. Min isters of ths present day to a great extent repudiate the name Sunday because of its heathen origin and use tho oid Jewish t6m Sabbath, but they sacrifice fact to fancy when they do it, for th...

DAKOTA It is argued by some writers that if the depression in food products should continue for any great length of time an inevitable result would be a reduction in the price of farming lands all over the country. But.there is no probabil ity that the depression will continue until such a result is reached, beoause it is not at all likely that in years suc ceeding there will be such immense crops as have been grown this year in almost every locality at home and abroad. In a general way the people of this country are becoming educated as to the necessity of the preservation of for ests, as they are to the aesthetic value of the propagation and ornamental trees.: The subject has two distinct phases, the material one and the testhefc io one. It is not alone the conservation of the streams which is to bu consid ered important, as this undoubtedly is the question of th...
