VOLJYE XViI. FRANKLIN, PARISH OF ST. MKARY, (AT 1k1' 1PIS,) LOUITI .1ý.I .11 AY 29, I S.2. NUMJYBER SO. SCIENTIFIC. AN ESSAY ON THE LAWS WHICH REGULATI THE RESEMBLANCE OF PROGENT TO PARENTS. BY JAMES T. SMITH, SURGEON. The laws which regulate the resemu blance of progeny to parents are per. haps the most mysterious with which we have to do in treating of the animal economy. To the most careless ob. server it is evident that the progeny always bears some resemblance to it: progenitor; but the how and the why this is the case, always has, and always will remain to a great degree a tnys sery. It isideod strange that a trans pgrPnt fluid should become organised aito a living, moving thing, in time to become sentient and capable of a sep arat, existence from its creator-feel ing and thinking, contrivingand plan 4qag, not only for its own support, but for that of others-capable of reason ing about the whence it came and the why it came upon the ea rth-how and the witherward it is going, a...

VOLUME XVII. FRANKLIN, PARISH OF ST. MARY, (ATTAKAPAS,) LOUISIANA ..... JUNE 5, 1 52. NUMBER 21. THE POETS' CORNER9 [From Dickens's Household Words.] FAMILIAR THINGS. There is a truth that travel brings, A truth of homely birth; We dwell among familiar things, And little know their worth. • The emigrant in distant lands, The sailor on the sea, For all that round us silent stands, Have deeper hearts than we. We dwell among familiar things, And daily with dull sight We touch a thousand secret springs Of sorrow and delight; Delight and reverential bliss To whose who, exiled far, Stretch dreaming arms to clasp and kiss Each little household star. We dwell among familiar things We know them by their use, And by their many ministerings Their value we deduce; Forgetful each has had an eye, And each can speak though dumb, And of the ghostly days gone by Strange witness might become. We dwell among familiar things, But should it be our lot To sever all the binding-strings That form the house...

tion of , Mr. Fillmore, I believe the 8ouh weauld cast fOr him, at the Balti more Convention, 116; and thus the nomination would be securdd. Let New York cast for him the 35 votes to which she is entitled, and I will be willing to vouch for his certain nomina tion. And secondly, as to the election, I firmly believe that if there is a whig inthe United States who can be elected Pteslderit, Millard Fillmore is the man. Of all who have been mentioned, he .is the most available man. Why is he set You may hear, any day, demo orats from Mississippi, Alabama, and even from Virginia, say that if a certain specified democratic candidate be nom inated at Baltimore, these States will go for Fillmore, if he be a candidate. And so, in such a contingency, I believe they would. And thus it will be seen to be a contingency, not beyond the range of possibility, that every southern State might cast its votes for him, and in that event only thir --two votes would be needed from the t rth to elect him....

VOLUME XVII. FRANKLIN, PARISH OF ST. MIARY, (A'TAK1APA1,) LOUISIANA.....JUNE 19, 1852. NUMBER 23. .. .. . . , TIHE POETS' CORNIER. The Minister who would Suit All The people of a certain place Refused a pastor to embrace, Unless he would undertake The weather to their minds to make. The thing was hard you will confess To be accomplished with success, And therefore most the charge declined, By reason of the charge enjoined. At length one wiser than the rest, A candidate himself professed, And he did frankly take in hand To satisfy all their demand. His word of honor he did give, And promised, if he did but live, That they should have, when he was placed, Such weather as they liked the best. On this assurance, great and small Without delay gave him a call: : And soon as that was once obtained, 'ith all despatch he was ordained. C. Noa, fall of hopes, they all expect To see his promise take effect; But, to their disappointment sore, .The weather proved just as before. Of this some loud...

As on the tempest-troubled shore .The lonely seaman stands, And sadly gazes on the wrecks That strew the beaten sands, He sorrows o'er his ruined hopes, And breathes a mournful prayer When breakes a wave upon his feet, And leaves a treasure there. With joy Upon the waif he looks, Then grasps the welcome prize, And in the path of life once more The light of gladness lies. And 'mong the dust of centuries A traveller gropes his way, For relic of some olden time That long has passed away; Pauhanee as thoughtfully he turns The gathered mould of years, Amid the things of little worth A volume rare appears. The hours are viewless angels, And still go gliding by, And bear each moment's record up To Him who sits on high. The poen o the nectar Omr bart', deep flower-cups yield, A sample still they gather swift, And leave us in the field. And some fly by on pinions Of gorgeous gold and blue, And some fly on with drooping wings, Of sorrow's darker hue.
