13 St &} 4H Southwest Chinese Journal MAY 1980 ON BILINGUALISM By WEINING C. CHANG, Ph.D. Psychologist Some Chinese parents encourage their children to speak only English for fear that if they do not speak English as the Americans do they may not get the same positions in the society as the other Ameri- cans. Others, on the other hand, try very hard to teach their children Chinese but are fighting a losing battle. Bilingualism is largely still a mystery. Psy- chologists are yet to discover a process which en- ables us to accomodate more than one language. As a matter of fact, the studies of the acquisition of language, an important part of psycholinguistics, is still at a beginning stage. The world is getting smaller; the chances of using more than one language are increasing. Judging from the examples of many successful bilinguals, it suffices to say that bi- lingualism does not hurt. Perhaps the issue is not whether children should or should not learn only one language, but wh...

fa Southwest^ Chinese^ Journal^ THE DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL and THE DEATH OF A POET MAY 1980 by O - LAN In China, summer is ushered in by the Dragon Boat Festival, which comes every year on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. My memory of the Dragon Boat Festival is full of colors and sounds. I remember vividly the bois- terous crowd enthusiastically cheering the racing boats in the river. On the boats, young boys showed off strong muscles while peddling rigorously, and rhythmically to the drum beats played by a man stand- ing on the tail end of the boat. The boats themselves were spectacles that no one should miss. They were long in shape, each with a dragon head proudly rising at the front, a huge mouth facing the waves and fierce eyes painted in gold. The sides of the boat were painted with the red and green scales of a dragon. Mothers were busy making sweet rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. They were then steamed for a long time until the rice bec...

21 © ife # Southwest Chinese Journal MAY 1980 REFLECTIONS by WILLIAM DER BING One of life's great satisfactions is the love of family members for one another. Sometimes it's shown through words or deeds. But, oftentimes, it's shared unobtrusively. And this love is infectuous to the point that others outside of a family are drawn towards it in the form of social activities, cultural activities, sports, education, church and numerous other activities shared by it's members. So much so that this circle over the years has be- come a family all it's own. Families and friends share each other's accomplishments, disappointments, successes and failures. The feelings are sincere. They are shared. And everyone cares. It happened at our daughter's wedding. The weather was abso- lutely beautiful. The scenery was nature itself. The music waifed through the trees and greenery and made the moment unforgetable. As each guest offered his and her best wishes, a thought kept emerging . . . the success...
