The hearing was requested by the city council Monday night fol- lowing a stormy meeting in which Patrolman Ted Fajkus gave his resignation to the aldermen, then asked that it be read aloud in open session. enny: The Martyr of Forbidden Words by John Sarrels "Lenny" is exciting theatre. Don't be misled by the buffalo in the bar out there at the Soap Creek Saloon. It's the real stuff inside the, uh. . auditorium. The audience is swept into the action from the moment they are allowed inside the play hall and are never allowed to lose the sense of participation. Glen Allen Pruett has paid a lotta dues and is engrossing as Lenny Bruce. He becomes Lenny and the audience becomes Lenny's audience. The movie was so preoccupied with pathos and per- secution that Bruce's humor was swam- ped. It's a strong point of this show that Lenny's material is the meat of the mat- ter. (Now, there's a phrase he would have had fun with.) The Austin Repertory Group blends biography, fantasy, and nightclub per- formance with energy and craft- smanship. The ensemble and band create a backdrop of shifting scenes, through which Pruett moves with cockiness and a keen sense of timing. Hot Honey Harwell, as played b...

Lenny cont'd from page 1 "See! We told you saying 'BLAH BLAH-BLAH' would lead to harder stuff!" Lenny recognized the determination of the tribe to censor. But he really believed that truth would win in the end. Sadly, truth sometimes demands a human sacrifice. Had Lenny not died and been deified by an emerging counter-culture, it's possible the authorities could have harried him out of the business of comedy forever. •NEWS ITEM. A House communications subcommittee yesterday released its long-awaited rewrite of the 1934 Communications Act—the basic charter governing broadcasting—and called for less regulation of the industry. It proposed replacing the Federal Communications Com- mission and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. .. and the bill explicitly prohibits the new agency from censoring or regulating the content of any program. UPl 6/7/78 How much did Lenny Bruce have to do with that? Maybe not a lot directly, but he planted the seed. A good evening's entertainment—a relaxe...

REVIEW Al Jarreau by John Moore Honest, he was just one man. But AI Jarreau, the performer Leonard Feather called the best jazz vocalist of 1976, seemed to have swallowed Ella Fit- zgerald, Sarah Vaughn. Ravi Shankar, VVes Montgomery, Herbie Mann, Joe Morello. and Paul Desmond When he wasn't singing lyrics Saturday night, he was singing guitar Or sitar Or flute Or saxophone Or, if you can believe it, drums. Jarreau opened to a Paramount late show already primed by James Polk's Ex- treme Heat. And that a local Austin gnmp admirably held its own alongside Jarreau's polished sidemen said something important about Austin. Jarreau himself said the rest; he called them "beautiful." Opening with the Elton John/Bernie Taupin "Your Song/' Jarreau bounded onstage clad in a tank shirt and white pants, and soon showed why he dressed that way. It doesn't come through on his records—but, on top of a voice that seems to know no limits, Jarreau moves. Like a cat, like ballet. Easy to see why his la...

Al Dimeola: Touching All The Points by Ron Burns Al Dimeola has always been one of the few guitarists that could capture my at- tention and hold it on technique. But at the Paramount the last time I heard him, he was just Mr. Flash with a hastily arranged back-up band. These things happen, however, and the show Saturday night was no repeat. New material and more direction since the im- mediate post-Corea days has made him sound tight, with a style of his own. The palm plants spread around the am- plifiers added to the sensation of carnival with virtuoso trappings. High-energy stuff, no doubt about it, but at times the flurry of sound was too loud, drowning the bass, which was low to begin with, and red-lining my ear drums. But still, it was tasty, from the unison staccato runs of marimba, keyboards, and guitar to the extended flights of Dimeola's fancy. He touched all the points from the soulful melodies to the drum solo with_A1 taking to the timbales, the atmosphere making us want ...

Schuck Shines In Rollicking Forum by Demi Prentiss St. Hd's University's current offering, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, brings Austin a rollicking evening-full of knee-slappers and belly laughs. I'he able cast provides fine sup- port for star John Schuck, who plays I'seudolus, the Roman slave whose quest for freedom nearly brings down his own house around him.
