PACE 4 THE SACH8E SENTINEL SACHSE,TEXAS SEPT 1981 Gardening-Texas Style BY: SIDNEY Z. PARK New 8 Inch Valve Installed BEWARE OF THE 'ASP' OR PUSS CATERPILLAR - Many years ago, when we were just kids, climbing trees barefoot, and running wild on our grandparents' farm near Granbury, we were occasional- ly stung by an 'asp'. And be- lieve me, there isn't another 'stinger' in the insect kingdom that can hold a candle to the 'asp' when it comes to sheer, unadulterated pain. Usually after being stung, a big knot, or 'kernel', formed in the arm- pit, and that hurt worse than the sting. Now, in a more enlightened age, we know they were not 'asps' but Puss caterpillars. These treacherous characters are, generally speaking, light gray or tan, about an inch long, and eliptical in shape, very slow moving, and attach themselves to tree trunks, limbs and leaves. Occasionally they will be seen on shrubs. They are well camouflaged and hard to see until you have put a hand or bare foot on them. 'As...
