iUiTi's-stm":tt HSU Brand October 20 1992 FEATURES 7 MUDSLINGING DEMOCRATS By Sara Allsup The past couple of weeks have been politically stimulat- ing with the debates and elec- tion day drawing closer. The candidates (especially President Bush) were hoping that the de- bates would help secure their positions with the American pub- lic. During the first debate we were re-introduced to Ross Perot the "wanna be dictator." How- ever in Perot's defense he held his ground and performed well inthedebates. Yet it was clearly obvious that he was the most comfortable with discussions concerning money since he re- lated every issue back to dollar signs. Stockdale Perot's run- ning mate did not fare well dur- ing the second debate. Yet he did walk away with his dignity which cannot be said of the two other candidate's running mates. President Bush needed des- perately for the debates to en- dear him once again into the hearts of Americans and fol- lowing the same pattern of the last four years...

Rod Pruitt: Candyman A Sugar Substitute Disclaimer I am not a horror flick kind of a guy. Well Mr. Barker has sunk pretty low this time. The plot is so basic as simple as a slumber party slasher. For instance we all have heard the one about a bad guy who loses his hand replaces it with a hook and then goes out and kills whomever because of the trauma. Or even the story that says if you chant five times while looking into a mirror a figure will appear be- hind you. Combine these ideas and borrow a few gimmicks from Freddy and you have Candyman. Mr. Barker even tries tomake it respectable by having two graduate students write a paper on low socioeconomic areas that blame their fears of society on a mythological being of modem folklore. 'Tries" is the optimal word here. I found Candyman predict- able at its best and clich...

It's good to be back. Traveling with the HSU Forcnsics team (read: public speaking) is not for the faint of heart. Compctctivc speaking on the college level is a full contact sport. Luckily I survived intact de- spite the fact that it was an abso- lutely foreign experience for me (read: baptism by fire). Late one night while I was sitting in a debate round I scribbled my notes for this column on a nap- kin. I would like to think this col- umn reflects my observations re- garding non-traditional students and the successes of anyone "fighting the good fight" for His sake. HSU Brand October 27 1992 FEATURES 5 Auvenshine Keeps Classes Interesting For HSU Students By Charlotte Garrett Being here at Hardin-Sim-mons we all have the "wonder- ful experience" of required classes. Sitting in these classes can be quite a chore unless the professor makes the class inter- esting. Dr. Donnie Auvenshine assistant professor of Old Testa- ment is such a person. His classes are interesting and he communicates with the students on apersonal level. He shows an interest in the student body and keeps up to date about activities on campus. Auvenshine has been at HSU since 1986. Prior to coming to HSU he was pastoring at small churches while finishing his de- grees at South Western Baptist Theological Seminary. Auvenshine received his bachelors degree in practical the- ology at Howard Payne Univer- sity. He earned his masters de- gree in Divinity and the doctor- ate degree in Old Testament SWBTS. HSU Brand October 27 1992 FEATURES 7 Mudslinging Republican by Jonathan Woody The topic this week is char- acter. This topic is the worst type of mudslinging and I really don't enjoy subjects like this because it has the ability to bring out some of the silliest dumbest and most atrocious characteris- tics of a persons past unneces- sarily. Earlier this year when the campaign was just getting un- derway a series of attacks was made by the Democratic camp on Bush which claimed that he had had an affair. The Republi- cans attacked back by saying that Clinton had had a very ugly and tainted affair with a young lady named Gennifer Flowers. Gennifer Flowers with all due respect is not your typical lady. Forthoseofyou whodon't know what I mean she will be in next months Playboy magazine with her juicy story on how she se- duced Gov. Clinton. Not a nice girl. Miss Flowers during these past few months has slurred Clinton's name all up and down the United States. Her last name is very mislea...

- ocoSS ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT U2s Zoo TV Tour: More Than You Bargained For 8 by William Biggs Guest Columnist Bono and Co. have redefined the general concert atmosphere and setting through their techno- logical Zoo TV Tour. Zoo TV. is an audio-visual concept cre- ated by U2 consisting of giant wall monitors East German trabant cars and much more. There is a setup of four to six different camera crews stationed' throughout the venue providing the images of the band which are cast onto the monitors. In addi- tion there are four main radio transmitting towers evenly dis- tributed across the stage. It's an experience all in itself. Below the stage are 12 computer engi- neers controlling the mixture of different graphics and imagery to be cast onto the monitors alone or in addition to the various shots of the band members. The first show on April 5 at Reunion Arena apparently wasn't enough for some U2 fans (con- sidering the 18000 seats sold out just under half an hour). On Friday Oct...
