A CAPSIZED LAMP. HOME STEAD DEMOLISHED. WARRAGUL, Tueslay.   At dawn this morning the homestead of Mr Patullo, farmer. situated a mile from the town. on Brandy Creek road. was burned down. Mr Patullo rose early, with view to starting havesting opera tions, and was carrying a light through the house when he tripped and capsized the lamp on inflammanble materials   On the alarm being given the brigade turnod out. but the bulding was practi cally demolished before the firemen could reauch tho spot. Only a few articles of furniture were saved. and these suffered from hasty removal.

OBITUARY Our Castlemaine correspondent writes -Mr John Dower proprietor of the   '"Newstead Echo." died at the Castle- maine Hospital on Tuesday. He came to the institution 10 days ago, and at his request was admitted to undergo an oper-   ation for the removal of gall stones. This was successfully performed on Sun- day, and the patient appeared to be making good progress until he took a bad turn on Monday, which culminated in his death. Deceased who was 50 years old, formerly conducted the "Mercury" at Carisbrook, and afterwards had print- ing offices at Minyip, Koondrook, and Stratford. He laterly established an- other at Skipton. He leaves a widow and one daughter. Our Maldon correspondent writes - Word has been received here of the death at a private hospital in Melbourne of Mrs. Sarah Clarkson, wife of Mr Geo.
