LAND SETTLEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 6 June 1913

LAND SETTLEMENT. After seven years agitating for the settlement of what is known as "no man's land"—a fine stretch of grazing and agricultural coun try, 7000 acres in extent, on the Jerilderie road, four to eight miles from Urana—the Urana Progress Association and townspeople now have the satisfaction of knowing that the Lands Department have at last notified that the area is available for settlement. It is a matter very satisfactory, for this land rush—it will be a rush— should be the means of starting in earnest land settlement around this township. There are thou sands of acres of land suitable for wheat-growing, near Urana, which is mostly Crown land, and, no doubt the Lands Department is placing these four blocks available to ascertain what demand for land exists here before throwing open further areas. We venture to say these, four blocks will be eagerly applied for, and we look forward to further closer settlement fol lowing it. Over 40 senior cadets wore prose cuted for faili...

The Urana Independents PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY, TELEPHONE NUMBER, 28. FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 1913. [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 6 June 1913

jbtUpwitytt PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY, TELEPHONE NUMBER, 28. FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 1913. It has been in evidence on many occasions in politics a third party holding the balance of power, yet in the minority themselves- So, also, it has become apparent that a third party in Australia holds the balance of power in an even larger <!-|J viem. onH it is olainl.v evi dent thfet this third party is the farmer, or who is known as " the man on the land." A study of the figures of the 1910 election, and again of this election shows that the vote of Labor, as compared with the vote of the business man and the employer of labor in the towns together with the vote of large landholder, balances fairly evenly. Therefore, it is the farm ing vote that must decide which party, Liberal or Labor, shall rule. The land question was made the fighting plank of the Labor party at 1910 election, and it was worked so well that the farmer was tempted to give Labor a trial for three years. The result of their...

Hotel keepers are reminded not to forget the renewal of their licenses. Rainfall.—Throughout Friday and Saturday good rains fell over this district, and also appears to have benefitted the whole of the' Riverina. 131 points were regis tered at Urana, bringing the total for May up to 429 points. - The seasonable rains of the past two months have considerably brightened the financial prospects. LamW-marking, which is now be coming general, is showing excel lent results, and the district aver age should be eighty per cent, or thereabouts. Many flocks are giving up to 90 per cent., whilst Urangeline Station result has been 95 per cent. There is not, however, the large number of breeding ewes as usually carried in the district, owing to many of the stations having sold off during last year's dry weather, and have not re-stocked.
