Nothern Minr. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 8 December 1875

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1875. THE productive power of every gold-field has a limit which, however remote the time may be, must eventually be reached. Charters Towers is now in the full tide of an increasing prosperity, and the mineral treasures daily brought to light appear inexhaustible. Allowing for the greatest possible expansion of the mining industry and the consequent increase in our popu- lation, it is evident that unless other in- dustries are fostered around us, springing direct from the soil and depending on it, that the time must come when the strug- gle for life here will become too severe to be endured, and the population must move to other localities. The discovery of gold in any locality may be regarded as an attraction to population to settle there. When, however, the gold gives out or its production involves great cost and delay, the population must either go elsewhere or drag out a miserable existence. The permanent settlement of an industrious population over the e...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 8 December 1875

TO THE EDITOR. SIR, — Allow me to bring the following facts under your notice. I sent to an agent in Towns- ville to engage two servant girls for me; she   did so, but found out to her astonishment after that the Police Magistrate, Mr. Fitzroy Somerset, would not let the girls come to my house. Now,   Sir, I want to know by what authority this Jack- in-office interferes between persons willing to hire their services and those who wish to engage them. This gentleman, if it was to send any number of girls to a station when black gins get scarce, would find no difficulty; but when a common publican at the Towers wants a servant, his conscience gets alarmed, and he be- comes a most virtuous guardian of the morals of female immigrants. I have kept my present licensed house for the last twenty months, and kept it as well and as respectably as any house on Charters Towers. I do my best to make an honest living, and I think it very unfair and unjust that any Police...
