** For the rnuaa that inrtK UKL-tAne« For the wrouff ttmt nco-ti rvfibtuc* rot the futnrc in the rtb»nM AJid the eooi tl»t we Dan do.' MONDAY, JANUARY 2G, 1891. The old Hindoos and Greeks thought that fire was stolen aud brought down from heaven by man ; and Herodotus tells us that the Egyptians believed it to be a living beast, which eats up everything it can seize, and dies -when it has devoured all within its reach. With these mythical ideas we do not here purpose to deal, but rather with something of a insre tangible and mundane nature. Seated in the seclusion of our office, we have opportunities of weigh ing up the probabilities and possi bilities of threatening events that are often denied to our harder working brethren, who, being engaged in the fierce race for wealth, are often tempted to overlook matters that ought to be of vital importance to themselves and their surroundings ; aud we feel cer tain that in drawing the attention of bur residents to a grave danger that menac...

EUROPEAN CABLES. LONDON, January 18. LABOUR RIOT IN GLASGOW. [Newspaper Article] — Zeehan and Dundas Herald — 26 January 1891

European Cables. : fBy SCBMABINK PABLE]. (fuom our own correspondent.) London, .Tnnuary 18. tABOCK RfOT IN GtASflOW. The most serious riot that has yet occurred in connection with the Scotch railway employes strike, took ?? place yesterday afternoon in Glasgow, when 300 colliers made a fierce and deter mined' attack ou' the ftco labourers employed by the Federated Shipping Association. In response to this attack the free labourers made a most determined resistance. Heavy fight ing ensued, during which such* terrible weapons as picks end crowbars, or, in fact, anything that could be employed for the offensive or defemive was brought into use. The strikers, how ever, outnumbered the free labourers, and receiving reinforcements had the free labourers completely at their mercy. The free labourers acting under instructions drew revolvers, with, which, in case of emergency, they have been armed for some con siderable time, ami by firing a few snots expelled the attacking party. The amount...

On Balstrup's line they arc most marked ; with this exception most lodes are situated in places almost covered by dense timber. The lodes in general appeariiucc arc veiy similar iu con stitution to the big outcrops at Broken Hal. Tlie amount of work done in the district ou various claiu's, under the most disadvantageous circumstances, demonstrates the, fact almost beyond doubt that Zeehan and Dtiudas will be an extensive and payable field.
