SOCIALITIES. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 19 September 1876

r - SOCIALITIES.' The visit of tire Rov. J. Q. Paton from h thoe New Hehriden is the first event of impnrtarinc on Iny list. I wish that our tnew T'wn Hall had been finisborl eo that a larger number of people might have hoard of the perils and hairbreadth escapes of there pioneers, of Christianity, the mlesionarioes of thg Now Hebrides. SWe-all .glow with enthusiasm at the mention of the Charse of the Light a flrigade, or Arnold de Winkelreid, or at t he Pass of Thermonylte, and if the 1 story narated by Mr. Paton were properly r written it would add another page to the annals of brure deeds. I hope this modern crusaldor will be successful in his mission to the crlonies, that of enlisting young men in the labour to which he has devoted his life. The Mayor of Melbourne was pleased at mebch he saw in Portland. but, being a person of taste and culture, he does not admire the way in which the esplanade has been sacrificed on the altar of expediency. HEYWOOD. September 18. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 19 September 1876

H Y WvOOD. (aox OUR OWN cOORanlronoDtr.) Beptember is. I promised in my last to enlighten you further on matters going on in and around this township, and, I believe, the " grog" selling element was to take precedonce. As far as the township goes nothing can be more strictly en rtgle than the proceedings of the two hotels, but altel on the principle, I suppose, of stolen frults being sweetest, the lovers of "grog" echlow the licensed houses and fly for their " poison" to the wretched hovels that here and there along the line are permitted to retail the vilest compounds at the highest recognised price. I have remarked that in the township of ileywood drunkenness and even drinklng among the navirre Is rare. Now it is si explained; and I may epitomise the wnole mystery by saying that when sly-grog shops are permitted within the precincts of a township something is adrift somewhere. Who is to hlome, the police or the Shiro Council? The iatter body as far as I can see because the former ...
