liutci'taimacnt lit Vraiui. 1 On the night of the 2ith inst,, in the Hall of the School of Arts, the ' Rainbow Enter tainers' made their first public appearance in aid of the funds of that institution, to a 1 large and appreciative audience. Mr. Harry Brennan presided at the piano, as accompanyist, and played the overture ' Tho Skaters ' in a manner which proved him to be a master of the instrument.' With a lively premonition of the dance ;to~-follow, 1 the curtain rose sharp at 8 o'clock on a I minstrel group, composed .of the fnll strength ; of the company, whioh included three 1 Indies. Mr. Percy Elam acted as : inter locutor,- and did it; well, every query, ?&e,1 being uttered so distinctly, as to be heard'irf every part of the hall. Messrs. Forrest nnd Dietz ns ' bones,' and Messrs. Kennett nnd Merton ns ' tambos,' fitted ...their; characters well, and elicited repeated, and:. sustained laughter by their eccentricities throughout the night. The opening chorus by the com...

Anti-Union Croakings. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 27 May 1898

Anti-Union Croaking's. It need not be supposed that the croakings. of the Anti-Bill Party, and there prophecies of ruin and disaster, are anything new in the history of Federation, or are peculiar to'; Australia and this year of grace. There was never yet a political union consummated without the denunciations -wailing3 of the Wants and Maclaurins, without the statis tical warnings of the Coghlans and Naslies, without, in short, the most strenuous opposi tion from the timid, the conservative, and the political extremists of every kind. Dr. Maclaurin now holds up to admiration the union of England and Scotland as the -ideal typo which wo ought to aim at, and he con demns the Convention Bill because it aims at something different. But at the time when the Scotch Union was effected, some of the ablest and wisest of Scotchmen de nounced it — as Dr. Maclaurin denounces the Convention - Bill— as ra -betrayal of their country's interests.- Such men as- Lock halt, Belhavcn, and Athole descr...

May 21. i,., ^A'-^velcome chango in the weather came up 011 Saturday, tho Mth inst., and r.ll day liSunday: the sky wore a very threatening aspect, On Monday and Tuesday the rain ! fell in slight showers, but unfortunately the gauge only recorded about 75 points in all. Jerilderie Carnival Sports. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 27 May 1898

Jciiltlcrie Carnival Sjcorts. The Fire Brigade and Cricket Olutl Sperts came off as arranged' on Tuesday last. The procession, which nB usual was the principal attraction, was very well managed, and the characters wero numerous and original, and those concerned deserve great praise for the trouble and expense they took in the matter. Marshall-General Bill Ei-an. of the Roval Mail Hotel, got up regardless of expense, on hiB grey charger, equally well equipped, con ducted the procession, which waB headed by the Jerilderie Brass. Band, who played some choice' selections during the march. The expressions of the public were genuinely up roarious as the procession passed along Jeril derie, Powell and Bolton streets, the comic and ridiculous characters being so perfectly represented. On arriving at the ground, where the full force of a bitter southerly wind was' felt, a rather poor attendance mustered to seo the sports — the general opinion being that it was far more comfort able by the fi...

. As the whole of onr readers are already aware, on next Friday (this day vreck) a referendum Trill be taken of the colony to decide whether we are to hare Fed eration of the Statea or not. We are not going to dwell on the many advan tages that will be the sequence in the event of the vote being carried in the affirmative, qb doubtless many of onr readers havo alroady satisfied them selves on that point. We *ill content ourselves with remarking that, next Friday a vote is to be taken, and we must, in the face of what is transpiring in Sydney, where tho foes of every Bhade of opinion have formed cn unholy alliance to dofeat the Bill, do our share in its favor. That the vote will bo heavy againBt ths - Bill in and around Sydney may be taken for granted, and also that not a rote in the city and suburban electorates which will bo against will be loft unre corded goos without saying, so it behoves us all to be prepared on that date to be up and- doing, by.Wt only seeing that our own elec...
