A Note from Brisbane. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 14 April 1900

A Note from Brisbane. Just when the A.S.L. Conference is In session to review the worn we are doing, it is meet to have a reminder from one who has worked very hard for Socialism. The General Secre tary is in receipt of the following : Brisbane, 5-4-900. Dear Barlow, — Pardon my not writing you beforo I have been taking a long loaf, i hope you and all the comrades are in good health and able to push the movement. The present appears to me ?» fitting time to push the munici pal franchise question ; the criminal neglect of the Sydney Municipal Council ought to be a «ood subject. Some enterprising citizen should take the whole Council into Court and charge them with murder. ' Muni cipal murder and murderers ' would be a taking title for a lecture. This is a city without an active politician, in fact there is no public 3pirit. I enclose a lew shillings, and remain. Fraternally yours, A. Thomson, In addition we have to acknowledge at various dates receipt of Queensland newspapers with it...

AT HEADQUARTERS. FREAK SOCIALISM. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 14 April 1900

AT HEADQUARTERS. FREAK SOCIALISM. This was defined on Sunday last by General Secretary Barlow as those proposals which asked members of the working class to get outside of Society aa it existed to-day and with the aid of little capital and primitive tools attempt the formation of co operative colonies as a means of eventually overthrowing capitalism. He also spoke against the argument that voluntary co operative ventures were aiding in the social revolution, claiming that this co-operation was good only for a certain portion of the working class, enabling them to keep a portion of the middleman's profit for their own consumption ;but its sphere was limited to that. He held that the one thing needful to be taught was the necessity of solidarity on the part of the Australian working class at the ballot-box and in the industrial field, and it was little short of criminal to dissipate the strength of the working class in other directions. At time of writing it is not decided what is to ...
