JAPANESE STEAJ1ER SUNK. Latest particulars of the sinking of the Japanese steamer Teasuren JIaru at C'bintao Island after striking a rock, state 105 pas sengers and 50 army officers were cast adrift in open boats with onlv a few provisions. Two of the boats landed at Chintao with 10 passengers. Owing to the fog it was impos sible to search for the others. The captain and most of the crew were drowned.

SUBURBAN SENSATION. A sensational occurrence was reported to the Burwood police shortly after midnight. William Dibbs, of Enfield, -was awakened nv hearing a noise in the fowl-house. Dibos secured a gun and went tiAvards the fowl house door, but before be could reach it, a man emerged and made for the back fence. Dibbs called upon him to stop, but the warn ing was unheeded. When the 111:111 reached tlie fence Dibbs again called upon him to sur render. but as the intrude!' naid 110 atten tion, Dibbs fired. The shot apparently en tered the fleshy pai l of the man thigh aud he fell screaming. Dibsb ran to net a light, but when lie. returned tbo wounded man bad vanished.
