THE PERSECUTION OF THE JEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Horsham Times — 10 March 1882

THE PERSECUTIOT N OF THE JEWS. General inihgnation has been stirred in England by the outbreak against the Jews, the history of which becomes the more ap palling as we receive corroborative details. To take the last instance, from Warsaw we have now a complete list of the 'houses destroyed. It is estimated that 2,011 fami lies have been ruined, numbering. about 10,000 souls. During the riots there were demolished 292 liquor shops, 003 eating houses, warehouses, and synagogues, 393 pTrivate houses, all the property of Jews. Another aspect of the movement is shown in the statement of a Russian gentleman named Moyer Bankanovitch, who has just arrived from Smilla, in the province of Goborno, in Southern Russia. Describing scenes of which he was an eye-witness, he says: "The outburst of terrorism occurred chiefly at the monthly fairs, when large numbers of farmers and peasants assembled in the town, and the townspeople incited the farmrers to attack other Jews. The drinking houses were t...

MISCELLANEOUS. [Newspaper Article] — The Horsham Times — 10 March 1882

MISCELLATNEOUS. . A London correspondent says in reference to the distribution of honors for the Mel bourne Exhibition :--Seme little surprise has been expressed in London at the delay-for it can be but a delay-which is taking place in the distribution for honors and titles in connection with your Exhibition. One does not like to make invidious comparisons, but it is pretty certain that as much at least instt be done for Melbourne as was done for Syd ney. Indeed rumor whispers that at least one hereditary dignitary is to be codferred upon a Victorian, and I don't .think your readers will have much difficulty in guessing oi' whose brow it is to fall.,?The delay has nrien' ?hiefy from thie imed f ear when:.the qiutian'" dime t9'.bas; nsidered It wee asriot uitil MLinieirs were acattered after the las Parliamentary session that the matter ripe forconsideration, andwe caneasily there fore understand how it has been dragged on till now. 'By that time he 'would be:able, to prepare an in dictment against the Government which he felt sutrethe country ,voull .endorse.
