At v10 o'clocic on Saturday night Mr II Shield, after extinguishing ali lights, locked up and. left the premises as usual : and, as he thought, perfectly safe. But, at about 3 o'clock on Sunday morning Mr Carter, who owns and occu pies the adioining premises' where he carries on the busiues of saddle and harness-maker, was awakened by^ a roarih0' noise, which he mistook at hrst for the approach of a storm ; but on looking through his bedroom window he saw ilames issuing from Mr. Shields' store, lie at once raised an alarm, and in about a quarter of an hour over 30 willing- hands were on the spot to render assistance.
