Understated Timber Loadings IRREGULARITIES AT SAW MILL. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian — 24 July 1943

,Understated Timber: Loadings IRREGULARITIES AT SAW MILL. Investigations made *by railway of ficials concerning consignments of timber despatched from a local saw mill led to the appearance at the last Warburton court of Hans Tuchman, proprietor of the mill, who was alleged to have understated the measure ments of various loadings of railway trucks, with the object of avoiding payment of full rates to the Victorian Railways Commissioners. According to the evidence, discrep ances were discovered in the case of 55 trucks between September 1942 and April 1943, but only six charges were specificially made, the actual amount of short payment being £4 5/8. With the other instances, the difference between the total amount of timber shown on the consignment notes and that despatched was 22,165 super. feet, representing 61ý tons and a total short payment of £20/9/5. Evidence was given by Edward Armfield, a special officer of the Vic torian Railways, that at the head of fice on May 1 defendan...

My Heart Was Stirred in Healesville [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian — 24 July 1943

My Heart Was Stirred in Healesville SPECIALLY, WRITTEN FOR' 'THE GUARDIAN" BY ?ILEEN FINLAY Author of "The Caravan Passes," "Full. Tutn," "Undefeated," "Thet' Hills of Home," "Miniatures of Life," Etc. I !tried to turn back the clock this week as I meandered down Nicholson street as I 'did, so. often and so long ago. But that was many .years ago. But the many private cars and huge tourers were apt to take my mind off the" wide old street of little shape that I remembered so well. But:here and there my heart.warm ed as. some "little place smiled at me, as if, to say, "But I'm still here!" and the first of these was the blue-stone bakery.- I took my.little child there .when' Queen Mary was going through :Healesville-I think in 190G--and I remembered we had hot buns and were told proudly that the bricks and 'stone were from a local quarry. I faintly remember the name Mr. Roy, but the name now is Mr. J. Fairbank, and that conveyed .nothing to my mind; so probably he was not there at tha...

Complaint To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian — 24 July 1943

Complaini -----V- To the Editor. Sir,-I read with interest the letter rom A. M. Sampson, relating to van -lalism, published last week. I would like to make known two acts that have been perpetrated out this way, ::at go far to back up that letter. On l ecnt Sunday a load of unsightly ubhish was dumped at the intersec tion of St. Leonard's and Donnelly's Treek roads. A few days later a load )f putrid cabbage leaves was dumped 3n the little picnic flat on Myer's creek road. There are few people in the town who have a load of cabbages _o get rid of. If the publishing of this letter has the effect of prevent ing a recurrence of these acts it will have served its purpose.-Yours, etc., W. E. WRIGHT. Myer's Creek, 21/7/43.
