LOOKING BACK I BY "KELP.", Chapter I. My earliest recollections are of Scovell's yard which:-then formed' portion'of St. Giles's rookery,'but- lias since been re moved to make way,for New Oxford: street and other improvements. I re collect .Scovell's yard: as a .dingy court yard, , approached; by, an archway, - low and dark; from Ghurch-lane j on one side of the- gateway lived " Stunning Joe Banks " as a. licensed victualler, and on the. other was Tim Mason, who sold everything -from <i red herring downwards. The yard was an enclosure of about six tall three-story houses 011 either side, with lamp-post and a water: stand-pipe in the centre, round which generally stood two or three slat ternly, unkempt women; the yard was black and' dirty, with a drain down ?-the centre, which afforded' free selection in mud pic making to the children who were numerous;: the atmosphere was redolent,of.
