SYDNEY. June 19th, 1874. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 24 June 1874

SYDNEY.- . (FROM OUR OWN CO-rfnEsi'ONDENT.) June 19th, 1874. i At last wo have an official announcement that Parliament will bo prorogued next week — probably on Thursday. This is just a fortnight less than ten months after the' be ginning of the session ; and it is- proposed to summon Parliament together after ''two months' recess. Truly, the colony has not yet got through its apprenticeship -in the business of, self-government — ten months' law-making and two months for the .worluner out of tho laws already made without now legislation is a vory unsatisfactory proportion'. The littlo democracies of Switzerland ineet onco a year for a day or two of legislation and spend the other 363 days in obeying the laws. There has, however, been little aotiial legislation on matters of public interest dur ing this session ; and . tho Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which has occupied the most time, is by no moans suro'of passing. , As if the session were too short, - though the Legislative Counc...

The debato in the Legislative Assembly, on tho matter. of tlib release of Gardiner, and a number of tho parties who aro suffering im prisonment for bnshranging, was characterized byan amount of bad temper, and bad language, that was to say the least of it disgraceful. That all the measures and Acts of the Go vernment should not meet with the approval, of their political opponents is not to be .ex pected j ir.deed, a; good opposition is .very necessa'-y .for keeping a check on the Ministry, and securing healthy legislation ; but when men differ in their opinions it is by no means vequisite that they should show their dif ference by tho use of languago more fit for a fish-market than an Assembly of gentlemen. When tlio menders of our Legislative As sembly were elected by their constituents, to sit in'Parliament as tlieir representatives,' it was believed that they were to set an example of good conduct, and show that they appre ciated the honor conferred on tliem, by tem perate langua...

SYDNEY. 27th June, 1874. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 1 July 1874

SYDNEY. (frosi our own correspondent.) 27th June, 1874. JLlie close ol the Parliamentary Session was in harmony with the proceedings of the last few months, inasmuch as discord, which ruled so long, prevailed and raged to the last hour of this contentious period. The Legis lative Council met on Monday— a very un usual act of self denial to our dignified and leisurely Upper House — in order to revise 'the decision of the Assembly (which it was supposed they would have reached on Thurs day, last week) on the amendments made by the Council in the Electoral Bill. But the Assembly had been otherwise engaged ; and the Council adjourned to Wednesday, to see if the other House would come to a decision in that time. The Assembly, after spending 'some seven hours in the discussion of charges made against the Government, under cover of a motion for tho adjournment of tho House, had to consider in Committee the amend ments of the Council m the Electoral Bill ; and, in conscqucnco of tho determi...

MELBOURNE. July 27, 1873. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 1 July 1874

MELBOURNE. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) . . July 27. 1873. Tlio Constitution Bill has been going through the Committee of the House, and so far has managed to escape mutilation by its opponents. Tho strong probability is that it will oscapo the ordeal of legislative inter ference without undergoing much, if any change. The. war will begin when the gentle men up-stairs pass it in review. The wholo question has been discussed, without; awaken ing much interest from the public out of : doors ; but I venture to predict .that if the Upper House should reject the, measure, there , ; will bo an immense : ariiount of public ire ' aroused, such as no action o £ tho Council has' stirred up since the Darling Grant was under discussion. THE SCOTCH REVIVAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 1 July 1874

THE SCOTCH REVIVAL. The following is a brief outline, from the Age, of a sermon preached on ' Sunday morning last, in the Oxford-street Independent Church, by the Rev. Mr. Bird, upon the re vivals that are at present taking place in Glasgow, and other towns of Scotland, under the auspices of the two American evangelists, Messrs Moody and Sankey : — The preacher, after announcing his subject, went on to comment upon the criticism that the move ment had met with, and notably that of the Rev. Geo. Gilfillan, who had declined to co-operate with its authors. He did not 'object to criticism, he Said, and proceeded*: — All criticism worthy of the name is simply the expression of honest individual judgment, and it is a matter of regret when religious teachers claim a special immunity from it, on the wholly unutterable assumption that spiritual phe nomena cannot be reduced to law, and that it is impious to submit the forces that are at work in a re vival, for example, to the test of an intel...
