Let's Write a Letter TO THE MINISTER FOR DECONTROL. [Newspaper Article] — Frankston Standard — 22 September 1949

SLe' Write 'a Letter TO THE MINISTER FOR DECONTROL. Deair Sir, " We xfeel that your efforts hardly nierit the: approbation of housewives or of business people either. Hardly a day passes: that- the daily paper :'oes -not announce a rige in some com modity.or,service which, in due course, is duly reflected in the prices, of other commodities and other services, as was pre dicted when you and your friends so strenuously opposed a continuance of sane control. Housewives were told' then, "Oh, Sit will be. alright; prices .-will automatically return to their proper. level, proving that control is unnecessary and an in terference .with our personal freedom." Prices are sky-rocketing so rapidly as to cause very grave embarrassment' to the housewife, and to 'threaten the very foundations of our financial system. To permit the present suicidal trend to continue can only result in ultimate disaster, It is a great pity that questions such as price control, petrol rationing, and other similar-n...

During the war years many pious resolutions ivere made as to what would be done in regard to decentralrsation when the enemy was finally overthrown. "TERRIBLE" BACK-YARD BATH SHOCKS S.M. [Newspaper Article] — Frankston Standard — 22 September 1949

" TERRIBLE " BACK-YARD BATH SHOCKS S.M. I think it is terrible that you should have to go outside to a detached, unlined washhouse to have a bath," said Mr. Wade, S.M., at Frankston Court, on Tuesday, when hearing applica tions by the Frankston Methodist Church Trust to have 'the. rents raised on two weatherboard cot tages in Nolan Street, built in 1928, and subsequently purchased by the church. The tenant of the first house under review stated, on oath, that the only bath was in an unlined laundry-in the back yard. The kitchen floor needed repair, she said, and it was impossible to put down badly-needed .new lino till the repairs were done. There were no wash basins or built in cupboards in the house; con crete paths were undermined and dangerous, and an out-house was in. a precarious condition. ' The tenants had done their own paint ing of the interior and back ver andah. . After, studying the valuation, 'Mr: .Wade raised the rent from £1 to £1/5/per week. Mr. Barclay, for the Chu...
