A FACE AT THE WINDOW. A Story of the Limited Mail. [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 7 January 1888

A FACE AT THE WINDOW. A Story of the Limited Mail. IT was a cold, bright night inl the early part of February, and the Limited Mail was speeding its way north. The passen gers bad settled down to a long ride, and made themselves as comfortable as cir cumstances permitted. Those within range of the light had pulled out their evening papers and begun to peruse the rechauffe of the morning's news, which they had already devoured. "Not much in the papers to-night," remarked Mr Barker to the company in general. He was a stout little gentleman, evidently communicative. A stranger here joined in the conver sation. He was tall and spare : he looked the typical Yankee. " Have you the last edition ?" he asked. "If so you'll find as pretty a little story as you'll meet with in a month's reading." Mr Baker. "Yes; he's a plucky fellow." "He's a co,tsummate scoundrel, at all events," remarked Mi Smithson ; a well known burglar," and more than suspected of being a murderer." "Yes, I'm afraid he's ...

UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCES. 'Geelong visitors to the Lal Lal Races on Monday last had anything but a pleasant time of it. One well-known sporting celebrity had £30 stolen from his bag, an other 'individual lost £11 in a mysterious manner, a well-known footballer lost a gold locket presented- to him by the Geelong pnblicat. the conclusion of the football season of 1838, and a young lady had a naarrowescape from death. WVhile the lightening was extremely vivid, a flash passed close to her, and rent her umbrella to nribbpns. The holder experienced so great a shock that she went into hysterics, and it was some time before she recovered. Nearly 'everyone who visited the course came back drenched to the skin.

AN ILL-FATED SHOP. [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 7 January 1888

AN ILL-FATED SHOP. The burglars have again made their pre sence known in a very marked manner, and as fate would have it, they chose the shop of Mlr. J. Turner, 46 Queen street near Col lins street, which was three times similarly operated on last year. The last time the lock of the front door was wrenched off, and many of the fancy bags, purses, etc., the well-stocked -hop contained, were stolen, besides some money, but no trace was ever found of the robbers or the pro perty. The burglars went to work in a different way this time. Finding the front too secure, they went up a lane leading to the back from Little Collins-street, jumped over the fence, and operated on the back door. There is abundant evidence;of their expertness and of the quality of their tools. First they bored holes all around the lock, but apparently finding that too tiresome, .cut out a panel of the door in a very neat manner. Ingress was then easy, and the door was opened. - A second door was forced, and the sho...

HIS LAST PRACTICAL JOKE. [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 7 January 1888

HIS LAST PRACTICAL JOKE. THE conversation had turned upn the perniciousniss of pri.ctical joking, when a well known busines. maan said : Don't speak of practical joking-don's .. make the merest reference to anything of the kind, for it makes me shudder. You all know Beaseley, the commercial traveller. He is an exceedingly good natured and prankish fellow, so much given to mild joking that on one occasion a party of us decided to play a joke on him that he would not be likely to forget.L We didn't exactly know how to pro ceed, and were tangled up in those per plexing intricacies which come of inumer ous suggestions, when a plan suddenly presented itself. - Beasley, havingl re-. mained in M- - several days, decided to go to L--, where his wife and boy lived, stopping for a day at B-- to at tend to several customers whom he had at that place. My plans were laid as soon as hemade known his intentions, but I pretended that I did not want him to go. " I must" said he. "I wrote to my wife ...
