SUBURBIA. EASTLAKE. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 September 1926

SUBURBIA. EASTLAKE. It looks as if sport is going to boom at Eastlake this summer. Our cricket club has had bad luck with their grounds in the past, but a splendid area just below the printing cottages has been allotted, and a willing band of enthusiasts hope to have the wicket and pavilion in good order for the opening match of the season. Mr. Davis, late of the refreshment rooms, Queanbeyan, has been appointed manager of the printing office mess at Eastlake. He is well and favourably known to most Canberra residents. Tennis is booming here, and the local club has been galvanised by the infusion of new blood. A few dark horses will be let out when the occasion warrants it. We understand that the question is being discussed among local business people of form ing a local Chamber of Commerce. Anything can happen in Canberra, as the amazing experience of our local poet goes to show. 1 give it in his own words: What are those curious sounds I hear? Sounds quaint and sounds faint, and s...

HOME NOTES SOME HOUSEHOLD HINTS. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 September 1926

7&-----; HOME NOTES i. ' By "Mona." SOME HOUSEHOLD HINTS. For this mouth's article we will take a few practical hints that may be of value in helping to lessen the work when cook ing and dealing with every day tasks in the home. Weights and Measures:-Scales are, of coarse, quite a necessary part of the kit chen equipment, as without accurate quan tities many good dishes may be spoiled. Very frequently, though, we need just a small quantity of butter, sugar, etc., per haps only an ounce or two, and it is waste of time to get out the scales and weigh such small quantities. The following are a few emergency weights and measures that may be of very great assistance to the busy housewife: One breakfast cup of liquid measures half a pint. One level breakfast cup of sugar weighs eight ounces. One heaped breakfast cup of flour weighs eight ounces. One level breakfast cup of butter or dripping weighs eight ounces. One heaped tablespoonful of flour equals one ounce. One good tablespoo...

WEATHER FOR AUGUST. A FROSTY MONTH. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 September 1926

WEATHER FOE AUGUST. A FROSTY MONTH. August was remarkable for its keen frosty mornings, followed by bright spells of sum mer-like sunshine. On fourteen days the weather records show that Canberra was thick ly sheeted with hoar frost till the sun dis solved the white crystals into drops of spark ling water that disappeared almost as soon as they were looked at. August was a rainier month than its predecessor, the gauge registering 204 points as compared with 170 for July. A higher maximum temperature was also reached, this being on the eleventh, the thermometer indicating 63.3 degrees. The lowest temperature experienced was on the ninth, when the glass fell to 26 degrees, this being two degrees higher than the minimum temperature for July. The third and last section of the dreaded winter season has pass ed without any serious climatic inconvenience; at no time was a flood threatened, and though some cold winds have penetrated deeply at times, there have been compensating windless day...

LIBRARY ACTIVITIES. ENJOYABLE DANCE. As further evidence of the energy of the Libraries Committee a most successful dance was held at the Acton Hail, on Thursday, 19th August. HEALTH NOTES CROUP. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 October 1926

HEALTH NOTES (tíy "Sister.") CROUP. One of the most frightening and yet one of the least dangerous of childish ailments is the ordinary spasmodic croup. It is most common about the age of three years, but there are many children who never have it at all. The attack comes on very suddenly, generally at night, when the child wakes sud denly with a dry rattling cough, great diffi culty in breathing, and a bluish look about the face. The wisest thing to do is to send for a doctor at once, because it is often very diffi cult to distinguish between ordinary croup and a torm of membranou* croup, which is really diphtheria of the larynx, and very dan gerous. Meanwhile, you mustn't be idle, for croup . wants very prompt attention, even though the spasmodic kind is rarely serious. After taking the child on my knees in a warm, airy room, protected from all draughts, and by the fire if it be winter, the three fol lowing remedies are what I have found to be of most value: 1/ Give it at once a sm...
