The Little Woolwich Infants. [Newspaper Article] — Warwick Argus — 16 December 1879

The Little Woolwich Infants. Out Udndhkd POUNDS k SHOT--One of tho 80-ton gunB constructed for tho Inflexible was tried on Thursday, at Woolwich, with a oh&rge of MStb. of powder and a projectile weighing over 17001b., when the velocity at the muzzle WAS ascertained to be lG67ft. per second. The gun is stated to be competent to pierce a vessel coated with 32in. of iron. This result has been attained after the enlargement of the gun, ordered in consequence of the per forin ince of the German gun designed by Hcrr Krupp to surpass the Woolwich ordnance, and the British gun is now superior to its German rival. The four monster 100-ton guns whieh were purchased in a hurry lost year from the Elswick Ordnance Works, for fear the BuBsians should get hold of them, having now passed a satisfactory proof at Woolwich, are to be relegated to the Mediter ranean. In all probability these weapons will have coBt the British Government £100,000 by the time they are mounted in some obscure cor...
