THE TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Observer and Normanby Advertiser — 14 May 1914

THE TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT. In accordance with the decision of the Roman Catholic authorities to conduct a temperance crusade throughout Vic toria, a special temperance service to tnaugurate the crusade was conducted under the direction of the coadjutor Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr. Mannix, at S S. Peter and Paul'a Church, South MIelbourne, Sunday night. There was a large congregation. Rev. Father Tighe, S.J., said that on earth mankind had to wage war always. It was thire same girlish tones that have ieen sung from time immemorial in the cow pastures, in the cornfields and besride thre fishing nets. The same that inspired Wordsworth.by the banks of t estmoreland Lakes and reminded hien of "old forgotten far ofr days and battles long ago." A3 the cows passed into the yard they presented a typical scene of rural peace until the skim milker appeared, wild eyed and honey bhanded around the corner of a shed and shouted, "Look out, these bees will bite." His expectations were fully realised--cows, horse and maiden com ing :in for equal attention. The old horse had in his dasy'gone over the sticks in the show ring. He went over some...
