Enlistment of Rev. Sydney Buckley. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 20 January 1917

MEnlistment of Rev. Sydney Buckley. After three strenuous years of dis interested and fruitful service, the Rev. Sydney Buckley, M.A;, Vica of St. James' Church, Ivanhoe, and headmaster of the Gramnmar School, has decided to go to the front. h~Tis manner of going challenges attention and admiration. The saine absence of self-seeking marks his len;listment that distinguished his career iin the district, for lie is to go as a private!; In what he preached, by his per sonal influence and now by. his ex ample, he has always set a high stan dard as to duty? of nien, whererei pos-L sible, to give their services. to the nation. Of the members of the Young Men's Club whichli gathered round him,- and of the eligible young men belonging to his clhuich, niot one shirked the call. Such a splendid response aided the otherl reasons which induced him to go, and it galled his spirit that- he alone should have to remain. Preferred the Old Tune. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 20 January 1917

Preferred the Old Tune. The Rev. Mr Whistler, of Hast ings, is said to have been rather ec centric in his words and ways. One day he wvent up the belfrey of All Saiits, of which he -was vicar, and theie he founid a bricklayer white washing the \walls. The workman was a member of the local band, and he ~ias whistling away a lively air as hard as hlie could, so that he didn't hear the vicar coming up. ' IS that a proper tune for a place of wo'orship '?" shouted Mr. Whist ler. " Beg your pardon sir," he said, ' but I forgot where I was." And then, to showlhe was sorry, he started whistling .the ' Old Hun dredth." Now, being a member of the band, his hand kept time with the music, and so the " Old IHun dredth" made the whlitewash brush go wonderfully slow. " Oh,, get backto your other tune," the old parson shouted, ' or the job'll never be done !"
