New Science for Ladies. [Newspaper Article] — Table Talk — 20 November 1885

New Science for Ladies. Our brethren of the nineteenth oentury arcs usually supposed to ignore that all-important question of "women's dress," "fits," and "mis-fits," which are so amply discussed by their more fragile sisters. The great Chelsea sage, however, Thomas Oarlyle, took a different yiew of this matter, and commences his." Sartor Resar tus" by remarking : " It might strike the reflective mind with some surprise, that hitherto little or nothing of a fundamental oharactor by way of philosophy or history has been written on the subject of clothes," Since the time, however, those words were penned by the speculative mind of the great philosopher, we have, if not in the history, at least made some considerable practical progress in the manufacturing of our garments. The scientific system of dressmaking must certainly be recognised as one of the most useful inventions of a utilitarian age." We can, therefore, not only predict for it a bright record in the future history of clothe...

Sala's "Cad" Letter. [Newspaper Article] — Table Talk — 20 November 1885

Sala's " Cad " Letter. Poon Sala! To got into hot -water, and to bo jcarioaturod into tho bargain, as a blowsy embodi ment of Hamlot by tho gravo, and all moroly for a casual neglect of tho definite article ! . In a private letter, -wherein slipslop is loss unpardon able than in press-copy, lie writes : " A clique of a: gang of CJads, styling themselves a Club, «' have," etc. Now, had lie lint written; " tho," instead of "a," olnb, he had certainly written ponso, and if not "Truth," at least,a surmise he had a porfeot right to form.
