THE POLITICAL SITUATION. Agreeably to oommou anticipation, the censure debate ended in an over whelming victory for the Government, the- ellied 'federal' forces being hopelesaly routed'. Ijfc was inevitable that such a combination' as that set up coold not 1iave auy pi^actical re snlt. The- elements oomposing the coalition- were of such a heterogeneous character, that eveu- if a- victorv had' been snatched^, disintegration in. the ranks of the party must have ensued, at an1 early date. The veteran statesman was visited- by. many of his old friends, admirers and supporters, whilst each p-st brought numerous, letters- wrl congratula tions. ' The test case to determine the - lepility of the Payment of. Members' Act wascom menced before the Full Court to-day, on an appeal from the formal decree of Mr Justice Mannine. Mr Pitcher. QiC. contended that the second clause of the Parliamentary Bepresenta ?wives Act referred only to the Parliament tben sifting and not to -any future Parliament. He submitted-ii. was perfectly oltar that between the termination of one Parliament and the commencement of the next there was no Legislative Assembly in existence. Mr H. Headley undertook to...
