Blackfellows on the Spree. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 23 July 1898

Blackfellows on the Spree. An uncontrollable fondness for fire- water on the part of two levanting blackfellows from Coranderrk settle- ment, named respectively Jo. M'Lel. land and Sam Rowan, alias " Friday", led to their appearance before Mr. Panton, P.M., at the City Court on Tuesday, on charges of drunkenness. Constable Pollard told the court that on the preceding Tuesday he found M'Lelland lying across the footpath in William-street, near Menzies' Hotel, "dead drunk." All ordinary methods of arousing a sleeping man were em- ployed, without any success, and the constable, acting on a bright inspira- tion, brought out his baton, and, with it, beat the soles of the blackfellow's boots. The soles, as it happened, were not in good winter condition, and the constable in a a short time had the gratification of finding his plan suc- cessful. The blackfellow first rubbed his eyes, and, gradually taking in the situation, he rose to his feet, and the rest of the constable's task was com- p...

Voting by Machinery. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 23 July 1898

Voting by 3achinery. Th "-rage for displacing human. labour Iy machinery still continues, and` the latest phase of the question has re ference to an attempt to expedite the operation of. voting at Parlirmeutary and municipal electidns by this means; Whether it will meet with the approval of the authorities -emain to be seen. It may be that, aiWwn most other case: where improvements are suggested, ,ested-.interests have to he reckoned with. However this may he, it seems certain that the adoption of vote-recoid ing machinery would so simplify matters, that a number of clerks and others would be dispensed with, and much expense saved. The most recent of these machines is the invention of a Norwich frin, and it- was exhibited. lately aiitthe mdinicipal offices of that city. The ballot papers take the form' of stout cards, circular in shape, and at tached to counterfoils in bound books. The intending voter is handed ,one of these cards, and is directed to enter a screened-off compartment,...

'At the arooery Store. WHAT IS TALKED ABOUT. There is a neat and natty grocery store at the corner of Rathdown and Palmerston streets, Melbourne, when one can always drop in for an interest: ing chat with the proprietoress, Mrs. Margaret Ross, who assists her hus band -in managing the business. The theme upon which the conversation fre quently turns is the marvellous reco very from neuralgia which Mrs. Ross has experienced through using Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People. A reporter dropped in at the store re cently, and to him Mr. Ross very kindly narrated her experience. I have been a great sufferer from neuralgia for ten or twelve years," she said, "but nothing relieved mie except Dr. Williams' Pink Pilis for Pale People, which alone have etlected a cure. All changes of season proved fu tile to arrest my malady. During the daytime my suffbrings were painful, but on retiring to rest, the agony 1 utlfered was excruciating, reuucuig me to-.a state of general collapse. I teit i...

The lHealesville Shire Council has been fortunate for some years past in having the services -of: a well-known and .capable man in Mr.rH. R.
