MONARTO. On Friday, February 4, a severe storm passed over this district. Liust couid be seen rising from every direc tion. but mostly from fallowed ground; however, no damage has been reported. Hy Die afternoon light showers of rain fell and the country looked refreshed after the rain. Sheep seem to he in poorer condi tion than in other years. Water is most essential for them where there is little feed, hut through the neglect of their owners this is not always available. All wheat at Mfinarto South has been forwarded to its destination.

A FURTHER GRANT FOR MOUNT BARKER COUNCIL. i . On Monday the chairman of the Mount Barker District Council re- | ceiyed word that a further grant for; the purpose of re-sheeting two miles of the Wellington branch of the mala ' road, continuing from Parkendula on ■ to Wistow. The grant covers the i cost of 2,300 yards of marble metal to be quarried at the Pbileox Hill] quarries, and tenders have been called for the supply and delivery of the ' metal, the work to be completed by the end of May. The council is also getting out 500 yards of metal from Dead Man's Hill quarry, and this is to be put down at tbe end of the two miles mentioned above. This lot, { with what has already been put out { on the side of the road will make a total of three miles on the Welling ton branch for the current year.

A VALUABLE FIND RETURNED TO OWNER. ■ Within- a quarter of an hour of the time U w&e reported to toe detective office as missing, a leather bag, con taining £70' in cash and £50 in cheques, which had been lost on the Mount Barker road at about 2 p.m. on J Friday, between the Bagle-on-the-Hlll and the Mountain Hut Hotel, was \ tinged in attbe detective office by Mr. Clarence A. Wright, motor sales man, of Mount Barker. Mr. Charles Ccoper, storekeeper, of' Mylor, who lost the money, reported the loss at 3.16 p.m.

SCHOOL SPORTS. Tli« suli-committee of the Recre uUon Ground Improvement Committee appointed to arrange for a school sports meeting met at Shearers' Office on Thursday evening of last week. Mr. P. H. Ingerson (convener) pre sided, and those present were Messrs. T Turner C. H. Wills, W. Doulitflre, R. A. Lutzow and J. W. Rawnsley. It was decided to hold sports on the Recreation Ground on Saturday. May 21. A lengthy program wa^ arranged, and it was resolved to invite all other schools la the district to take part in the sports. The program will he issued shortly. The proceeds of the sports will be In aid of the Recreation Ground Improvement Fund.

The South Australian Farmers' Coope rative Union Limited (Dairy Produce De partment) reports under date February 15, as follows:— flutter.—A good consumptive demand .5 being received for butter, especially choi cest quality, and as local production is in sufficient for requirements the shortage is made up by importations from the eastern States. The price of butter in Sydney was reduced by lid. per lb. yes terday, consequent upon a large Increase in production in New South Wales, but as the output in South Australia and Vic toria is declining, the local market is steady at unchanged rates.
