A CLOUD OF BUTTERFLIES. [Newspaper Article] — Queenscliff Sentinel, Drysdale, Portarlington & Sorrento Advertiser — 1 January 1887

A. CLOUD ,OF BUTTE RF[IE d;. One of the monst beautiful sights in t.he wirld is the annual migration of butterflies across the Isthmus ?? i Panamda. Where they come from or: whither they go no one knows, arid though many distinguished: naturalists :have attempted to solve the problem it' is still as strange a mystery as it was to the first European traveller who observed i= t. Viewed from a distance, or through a telescope, the spectacle is indiscribably woiderful. As the sun shines on the millions of swiftly ufluttering wings the result is a glisten-. ing and pulsating haze of golden green. When the wind drives them to the earth they can be caught in handfula. Swallows and flycatchers single out the largest atd chase them, often for miles On b...
