MAGISTERIAL INQUIRIES. A magisterial Inquiry was hold at the Alexandra Cottage IIospital on Mondays, before AMr J. Whitclaw, J.P., touching the death of Margaret Lonnon, who died in the institution on the night of Saturday, the 23rd inst. Mounted-constable Irvine conducted the case on behalf of the police, and called David M'Waters, who, on oath, stated-I am a contractor, and reside at Alexandra. On Saturday last I saw the deceased at about 11 n.n. ; she was crossing the Eildon bridge. She spoke to me, and was in good health. She looked over the bridge, and said it was a dirty job. I was engaged tarring the bridge at the time. Some time after I heard a cooey in the direction of the hut occupied by the deccaned. A man named William Sullivan came up and said to Alex andler D)oak, " Go for Mr Lennoin, as deceased is very ill." JACK PALMER'S LITTLE TRICK. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 30 March 1878

JACK PALMER'S LITTLE TRICK. Evidently Palmer was not mad, after all; so I naked him what his plani was. "Well. you 'ce lie wants to be sent to sleep for ten years. He says as he's got nearly another hundred and fifty years to live, he can very well afford to sencrifico tlat space of time. Now I know that ia sudden shock has ia peculiar effect on certain temperaments. Suppose Uncle John went to sleep, any for two or three dlye, and woke suddenly to find that the year 2000 had come what would be the effect of the shook ?" "It would kill him !" I exclaimed, turning pale at the very idea. " But how could the yeara 2000 comne in three days I" " It need not come. He would only have to imagine that it had." "Do you want me to be a party to the murder of my uncle ?" I asked indignantly. "Don't be a fool," he answered sharplyJ " Who wants to murder your Uncle John? I simply want to humor this whim of his, and try and cure him of his folly for you sake. HI.'es been reading the accounts of thi...

Alexandra & Yea Standard PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY "EXCELSIOR." SATURDAY, 30TH MARCH. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 30 March 1878

I'UIILISIE F' EVERY BATURnAY " EX XOELBIOI." SA.TURDAY, 30rsc MARCH. So the gront political tiagedy of "The Deadlock, or which is to win," which has occupied the boards for the last threeoo months, has been stcceeded by the laughable farce of "' The Compro miso," of which Mossrs Lyell and Munro were the authors, and the ohief characters wore sustained by the lead ing members of our well-known Parlia mentary company of stock actors. We hardly know whether or not to con. gratulato the public on the result ; but certainly the principal performors are to he complimented upon the versatility they have displayed in thus suddenly abandoning the King (Cambyseos vein, and adopting the role in which the suaviter in mode il so very much more conspicuous than the fortiler in re. It will doubtless be asserted that this change in the programme has been made in the public intoreets, but to unsophisticated outsiders the question can ncnrcely help arising, what have our two Hlouses been fighting ove...

A THRILLING ACCIDENT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 30 March 1878

A THRILLING ACCIDENT. -4--C-- The Murrurundi Times gives an account of a thrilling accident which happened recently near Scone. That paper says :---- Mr Robert Hall, of this town, started on horseback for Dry Creek, near Scone, Intending to attend an auction sale to be held in that locality. Taking a short cut over the ranges, he reached the summit of the spur known as the Rocky Downfall, near the head of Dry Creek. Here he missed the only track lead ing from that almost inaccessible height but choosing a course along the precipitous face of the rock, sought to effect a descent. This was being accomplished with much difficulty, when an unfortunate slip gave the mare lie was riding a sudden start, and becoming restive, she missed her footing, and then bounded over the terrible precipice at her side. Mr Hall kept his seat, and, for- tunately, his presence of mind. In her fall the mare passed between the limbs of a large tree standing about seventy feet down the rocks. To one of the ou...

THE ANNUAL RACES. (To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 30 March 1878

TIIE ANNUAL RACES. (To the Editor of the Standard.) Srn,-I have been looking for some time pnast for some announcemnent of the annual races to be held at Alexandra. If it is in. tended to have them at nil this season, surely it is high time to makeo smo arrangements. With a fine coursn-which by the way may be thrown open for selection unless utilised for the purpose granted-and a respectable sum of money to the credit of the race fund it will not be creditable to the inhabitants of this fine district if they allow the reason to pass without a race meeting. Mansfield has had its races, and very good ones, too. Yea is following suit. Are there no lovers of the sport in Alexandra and neighborhood, or have they no hIores able to conlpete at a country race-mcetinlg.-Youre, &c,, . JooKEY.

MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 30 March 1878

MELBOURNE LET1'ER. (FsROI OUR OWN COnRESPONDENT.) This time the crisis seems really settled, although what there was to settle, when both sides seem to have been so ready to give up all they pro. fessed to have been fighting for, is not a little puzzling. The Council has egroed to the Payment of Members Bill, but of course this could not have been of any moment to tile Assembly, as the members of that body have all along declared that question to he quite a secondary issue. The Appropriation Bill will doubtless be passed in a day or two now, and the deadlock will be a thing of the past. Professor Pearson's report has been n gobe mouche to the newspapers, it being sflliciontly voluminous to cut and come again. Of course the Ministerial prints are in raptures with its exhaustive and practical character, whilst the Oppo sition organs are just as severe in its condemnation. One conspicuous result of the report may be taken for granted. The Professor recommends a permanent head of experi...
