. A House at Damascus. A traveler who has been visiting the ^ dwelling or Assal, one Of the leading citizens of Damascusgives the following description of the building : Wfien we arrived at the front oC the mansion we were surprised at the meanness of its appearance—at tho walls of sunburnt bricks and tho )f&w miserable windowsstuck here and '' there , without order or' arrangement, possessing no glassbut covered in with a thick lattice formed With cross-bar3of Wood, Great, however, was tlie contrast between tho exterior of the house ana the scene that presented itself when i we passed through a door opened by a slave. We saw,.to our surprise and pleasure, a spacious and magnificent court, paved with Dutch tiles and 1 marble. In the centre of it wad a large fountainbubbling over into a cool, clear, circular reservoir af water filled with pet fish. Around this j court extended a range of buildings lone story highof a pretty, fantastic style ,of architecturedecorated with Mo...

.Knocked About. It isagood thing for a young man to be knockefi about in the worldthoughhis soft-jiearted parents may not think so. AlljyoutliSj or if not all, certainly nineteen-tweutieths of the sum total, enter life with a surplusage of self-conceit. Tl^c sooner they are relieved of it the better. Ifin measuring themselves with wiser and older menthey discover that it ia unwarranted, and-get rid of it gracefully^ of their own accord, well aud good; if not, it Us desirablefor their own sakes, that it.be knocked out of them. A boy who is sent to a large school soon finds his level. His will may have been paramount at home { but schoolboys are democratic in their ideasand if arrogant f he is sure-to be,thrashed into a recognition of the golden rule.— The worldris a great p'iiblic school, and it soon teaches a new pupil bis proper iilace. , ! , A BEAOB OF IHDI80BETI0NS. ftvhen wine is in wit is out, saith the old proverb. We are not surprised, then, that durin ' g-a press dinner in Richmond after the release of Jefferson Davis on bail, Mr. Jos. Maefarland, a correspondent of the Washington Chronicle, proposed a toast to " Jefferson Davis, the soldier and the man. " Mr. Maefarland resembles ¦ a 10-horse power " engine in motion, without governor or balance wheel. This describes his normal condition : when quickened by potations his eccentricity is ~ inueh accelerated. We recollect when Maefarland was a reporter on the Chronicle, now he came to us one day in a state of perspiring excitement, arid related the particulars of a new invention for navigating the air. The machine operated by gravitation' j the navigator starting from the ground and proceeding in ever ascendirig spirals, and returning to terra firma at pleasure. He was so full of tho flying machine, and so annoyed by tiie ridicule bestowed upon it, that he ...

[From the Army and Navy Journal, May 18.] ¦ TaBttEfcfiASB'OFDAVIS. ' ' . Ja the discharge (on ball) of Jefferson Davis from Fort Monroea lame and impotent conclusion rounds offwhdVat best has been a shabby and disgraceful affair. The fair .commentary, on [the release of Jefferson Davis (if. as lis probable; he shall be discharged In-November) , will be that treason is not a crime or. it it he oneis so trivial a weakness that it must not be punished—the wellknown oratorical utterance of Senator Andrew Johnson to the contrary notwithstanding. As the case stands, we are all abashed with :a conviction that the great gulf fixed of old betwiit "loyalty " and "oathbreaking " has been somehow filled up, so that the ancient landmarks are gone, and theoi)}y crime committed by the Confederacy was the crime ofinot achieving success. The six years r _ career now consummated have adcred to Jefferson Davis abundant celebrity , without 'clothing him in the least with historicgreatheps. The true h...

The mud was deejj hence to Tioga, and the clouds lachrymose. Everywhere wc ( observed about the same backwardness as reigns hereabout. TuCfuct, there iB scarcely any difference, as regards the state of the farmers' work, between the uplands of Tioga anct the valleys j of the .Cbeinung and North Branch. . But we can bear testimony to the breadth and promise of the wheat crop everywhere. We saw, probably,,thousands of acres of wheat, and not a square rod of poor growth. The crop is vigorous and well advanced!, and old farmers admit that it was never 4 better. Beyond £his the earth is barren of brops, save in a few acres of oats ' here and there, sowed beivfeen "Showers on light lands. The meadows and .PaB" tures are in good condition; apple orchards are just ready t6 burst into unusually luxuriant b...
