The Chemical Value of Straw- [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 23 January 1886
The Chemical Value of Straw- Although straw is looked upon as almost valueless except as bedding , yet it requires a great amount of food from the soil to produce it . True , the carbon is taken from the air , and also returned to it when eliminated from the constituent elements of straw , but that which comes from the soil must be again returned to it , or it will suffer loss to that extent . If wo bum one hundred pounds of straw we derive from four to five pounds of ash , or nearly one hundred pounds of ash from a ton of straw . This ash contains soda , lime , potash , phosphoric acid , magnesia , sulphur , iron , silica , and chlorine . The nitrogen is driven off by combustion , while but very little carbon remains , which is in a state of combination . Considering tho different kinds of straw , we find of potash about 0 . 40 per cent in the straw of wheat , and 2 . 50 per cent in the straw of the bean . At a glance thc supposition would be that as the proportion of potash in whe...
Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 23 January 1886
Wheat in the Rotation Every farmer must judge for himself how often wheat may be used in the rotation . It is not unusual on the new and fertile farms of the West to produce four successive crops of wheat after breaking the sod . Three crops may generally be grown with safety . Then the soil may be seeded to grass and clover for recuperation . The grass and clover are fed to stock , and if the manure is returned to the soil , one quarter of tho area of the farm may be devoted to wheat , if no other grain is sold from the farm . If the soil is not of first quality , and natural to wheat , or if the cultivation is slack , the crops quickly deteriorate . WeU worn farms will not admit wheat oftener than one year in eight , and not then without manure , and especially clover as a renovator . With good cultivation , such a reduced state of fertility is a long way in the future on the fertile wheat 6 oils of the West . Fall Plowing and Wheat . The importance of fall plowing has al ready be...
