OBITUARY . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1876

OBITUARY . DIED . —On March ist , of typhoid fever , Fannie Brown , Class 79 . We feel very sad in announcing that a fellow-student—one of the brightest of our number—has suddenly been called from our midst to the rest that remains . Her death is deepl y mourned by both classmates and teachers . A faithful , earnest student , her rank in class was among the first . Bright , gentle and kind , she was loved by all who knew her , and the many sunbeams which she scattered will shine forever in the hearts of her friends . Her family have our heartfelt sympathy , in this their sad bereavement .

ILLINI CORRESPONDENCE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1876

ILLINI CORRESPONDENCE . NEVADA—ITS MINES , SILVER , CHINESE , & c . BY HOTE . To the superficial eye the entire state of Nevada is nothing more than a vast expanse of sagebrush plains and barren mountains . The soil offers little encouragement to vegetation , and without an expensive system of irrigation , agriculture of any description is an impossibility . None of the wealth of the state lies exposed to the eyes , and can only be found by delving down deep into the mother earth . Yet wonderful as are the mineral productions , every day but confirms the conviction that but little is known of the extent and value of her mineral deposits . Not only are the most precious metals found in untold millions , but the less valuable metals also exist in quantities which , but for the overwhelming deposits of gold and silver , would be sufficient tc attract prospecters and capitalists . In addition to the precious metals , iron , salt , and lead huve long been known to exist in la...

EVOLUTION IN VERSE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1876

EVOLUTION IN VERSE . A full report of the lecture delivered before the Fortnightly Club by Prof . Peckham . The subject was Embryology , and the report was taken down in a system of pantagraphical phonography invented for the occasion . The Professor stood up with his countenance bland , ( The board was before him , the chalk in his hand , ) And proceeded at once to unravel his thesis By taking our bones and our bodies to pieces . He drew on the board a nucloidal spot Where in its beginning our being was got , And proved , on a strictly biological plan , That a man was an egg and an egg was a man . With logical arches he bridged o er the chasm ( From the acme of life to the low protoplasm , ., | And by analytical molecular dilution Resolved us at last to protozoic solution , Where vagabond atoms lie listless around And no histological traces are found , While the question remains , is their ultimate use To build up a reptile , a man , or a goose . Having sundered our atoms protoplas...

RECOLLECTIONS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1876

RECOLLECTIONS . { Continued from March . ) THE magnificent bridges across the Thames are worthy of notice . Waterloo Bridge , built of granite , is remarkable for its size and elegance ; so are many others . Railways pass over them , little steamers under , and at night , standing on any one of them , one pauses to admire the many thousand gas lights that cross the dusky river . The tunnel for foot passengers , built under the river , is a curiosity to be walked through , even at the expense of wet hats and drabbled skirts . London is indebted to the genius of a Frenchman for this tunnel , which was thought at one time to be entirely impracticable . But in these modern times the world laughs at impracticabilities and says , Tell us of a tide we may not tunnel , bridge , or float upon . Leaving London for a time we took the Great Eastern Railway for Harwich , and arrived there in time for an Antwerp steamer . Our principal notes were , we distinctly remember , those of dissatisfactio...

INFORMATION FOR THE PEOPLE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1876

INFORMATION FOR THE PEOPLE . We know it will be a blessing to extend the invaluable privileges we enjoy here , to those outside our Institution . The ladies of the Alethenai , with commendable good sense , have from time to time secured the services of lecturers , eminent in various departments ; as Jurisprudence , Science , Agriculture , Domestic Life , etc ., and thus advanced the solid culture of their Society . With the generosity of conscious advantages , they permit the other societies and members of the University to avail themselves of the great benefits of these lectures . One of these delivered last season , upon the Charms of Rural Life , was so replete with wisdom , rendition and beauty , so rich in thought , so profuse in literary gems , so broad in its ailabsorbing sympathies , its delicate appropriateness , its profound insight into human wants , feelings and passions , that very many have requested its publication . The author has kindly consented , and sends us the ...

OLD BRINDLE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1876

OLD BRINDLE . And as I tried to drive her faster and faster , She would run her nose into the clover Clear up to her eyes , almost all over , And munch , and munch , and muncn , and old Brindle Could make the clover dwindle . As she luxuriously chewed In a devotional attiude , With thoughtful , balf-closed eyes , I kelpt her with a good gad ; V This was just after sunrise ; And directly I didnt wish I had ; For she tost up her head and snorted , And gave me a most significant look , While with hind hoot wildly distorted , She kicked me kersouse right into the brook . Wet and moist and damp I crawled out upon the bank All bedaubed with mire ; none could look sadder ; And as I grew madder and madder , I ript out a certain unprayerful expression So strong , so direct , so explicit , That had the old cow obeyed the suggestion , And I didnt then see how she could miss it—And for this falling from grace Had I gone to the same place . Where noodles crowd with eager haste Through those broa...

THE UNIVERSITY . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1876

THE UNIVERSITY . TRUSTEES MEETING . The Board of Trustees met in the University parlor at 4 o clock , Tuesday , March 14 th , and was called to order by the President , Mr . Cobb . There were present ; Governor Beveridge , and Messrs . Blackburn , Mason , Flagg , Pickrell , Sabin , Brown , Gardner , and Cobb . The business agent s report was presented and received . An appropriation of $ 35 was made for improvements in the gentlemen s dressing-room . The Regent then read his report . He reviewed the history of the past eight years ; considering the success attained to be evidence in proof of the soundness of the ideas upon which the University has been founded . He reported the increase of attendance from 77 at the end of the first year , to 406 at the end of the year 1874 ; that there are 3 85 students now attending , and that the prospects for a large and rapid increase in attendance are very promising . During the eight years of the University s existence 1098 students have been ...

AROUND THE UNIVERSITY . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1876

AROUND THE UNIVERSITY . The Alumni contemplate a banquet . Base ball players again frequent the campus . The Philomathean Society have the boss piano . The pie-in-e re spirit is what they call it at the Chase club . The recent rains have caused an unusual amount of drifting . Is George Rice an authority on the contents of postal cards ? The long and the short of it—Jim Campbell and Hallinan . Query—What senior always draws heavy in resistance of materials ? One of our students has lately manifested an extraordinary zeal to attain a high political station . The annual catalogue of the University , and also the Art Gallery catalogue will be printed at the ILLINI Office . Miss Halsted and Miss Lily Gipson have secured schools , and will leave us , to assist youthful grangers up the hill of science . A member of the Senior class proposed , as the class memorial , a new foot-bridge across Silver Creek (* . e . Bone-yard Branch ) . John Charles McCauley P . G . ( i . e . Post Graduate ) 7...

EXCHANGE AND BOOK REVIEW- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1876

EXCHANGE AND BOOK REVIEW- The Tripod contains a good , true , sensible article on Honor . College Record . The Impending Crisis deserves mention as being finely written . The Targum for March presents a solidity of construction and thought which vies with the best of our exchanges . Please notice : the Student has merged into the ILLINI , SO there is no necessity of the Targum sending two copies to our exchange . The College Herald presents a remarkably dull appearance in its last . Awake ! Warriors of the quill ! Is Scotia dead ? Is the old spirit frozen in the veins of the Dal housie Gazette ? And now the voice of the Senior is heard plaintively chanting in his room : Barbara , Celarent , Darii , Ferroque , Prioris ; Caesare , Camestres , Fes—Fes—confound the rest !—Ex . The Packer Quarterly is again at hand . Its pages are full of interesting articles . The Westminster Monthly , that sheet of cobweb theories and dryasdust articles crawls slowly to its dusty corner on the exchange...
